Our friend was the coordinator, and every year she managed to have the stairs leading up to the sanctuary stage filled with boxes on the weekend they were due. Thousands of boxes. They made such an amazing impact on us. And on the kids. They were so excited to see them, and wanted to know what was in them. And then they wanted to contribute too. And all we needed to do is to fill up a shoebox. Our first year, we put together 2 boxes, symbolicly filling one for each of our boys. We chose a balance of toys, school items, and toiletries, since in many locations the boxes are distributed, the kids don't have any belongings of their own. They don’t have any supplies to use at school, or toys to play with at home. And forget about clean living conditions. We tried to think of not only the child who would be getting the box, but also the household, and tried to make sure that most things we picked out would last for years, and would be useful for more than just that moment.During the year, it gives us wonderful moments, when we stop and think that somewhere in the world, there are 2 boys the same ages as ours that are experiencing an abundant year because of what we put in a little shoebox. And now it's a regular thing. During the late summer, when we shop for our boys for school, we all enjoy shopping for our extra boys who will get something in their shoeboxes. And closer to November, we spend a day putting the items we’ve collected (sometimes over the whole year) into our boxes. Our boys can really identify with it, because this is directly helping someone their own age. It makes it tangible for them, to know that they are touching someone else's life. We hope this is the beginning of a lifetime of giving generously to minister to others. And even if it is only just in a very small way, we hope we are bringing a little light into the life of two of these children.
