After checking in we were put on golf carts and taken to the building where our rooms were located. We had to go through a metal detector again and our backpacks had to be scanned once again. Then we were taken to the 4th (top) floor. The elevator opened up to a beautiful open room with refreshments set up for us. The property was expansive with a lot of beautiful buildings but for convenience we were all assigned rooms in the same building and on the same floor.

Our room had a breathtaking balcony view of the pyramids! I was already thinking about staying up all night and sitting on my balcony and just staring at them! However, the day wasn't over yet, we were going back to the pyramids again after dark and I was already getting tired. It had been a long day!

After we unloaded our backpacks in our room we all met back at the welcome reception the hotel had planned for our group. We were served a dark purple beverage in wine glasses. I couldn't decide what it was – definitely non-alcoholic - it tasted like a cross between sweet grape juice and sweet dark cherry juice. Bill thought it was pomegranate juice but I knew it was too sweet to be pomegranate juice. We were both wrong. It was hibiscus juice! Now I have to try to find this at home – we both loved it and drank two glasses each!

The large photo above shows how the Mena House looked around 1900 and I snapped the photo on the right from our balcony (unfortunately it was starting to get a little dusky outside)

It was starting to get dark and the bus was back at the hotel to pick us up to take us back to the pyramids for the light and sound show. It was a great show which explained story of the history of Egypt. The Sphinx (lit up in laser lights and slightly animated) was the narrator and explained that he had been around for over 5,000 years, that he was older than the pyramids behind him (also lit up with colorful lasers). He told all about the Kings and Pharaohs of ancient Egypt as he was there to watch their stories unfold. The pyramids are over 4,500 years old and the Sphinx explained about the construction of the pyramids and the history of Egypt as he saw it happen.

Back to the hotel for a light dinner before bed.

Then a hot shower for me, then a hot shower for Bill and a wonderful night's sleep for both of us! My well planned intentions to sit on the balcony and watch the pyramids all night didn't last more than a few minutes.
