We arrived in Brasov around 3:30PM to drizzling rain and a lot of thunder and lightening along with very dreary skies – very dramatic! We left the train station and took a cab to the inn - every time we saw the flash of a lightening bolt or heard thunder Bill said, “Hey - we're in Transylvania!” Then he started singing, “Transylvania, Here I come!” to the tune of “California Here I Come” until we were all 4 singing it. I was surprised but he was really getting into the Transylvania spirit of things! I didn't expect that to happen – it just “isn't Bill”!

Richard and Caitlin had already reserved a room in advance so we walked to the inn with them, not sure where Bill and I were going to stay that night. We were delighted to find there was one room left! We checked into our room – a charming place, kind of a bed and breakfast without the breakfast.

It really reminded us of the bed and breakfast we stayed in when we were in Germany (except that one did have breakfast!). The bed was the same – no box spring, just a wooden platform with the mattress directly on it. And a bottom sheet but no top sheet and the comforter folded on top of it. Exactly the way it was in Germany.

We all upacked and chilled in our rooms, than at 5:00PM we met up to venture out and find food. The center of the old town was a 15 minute walk and it wasn't really raining, just drizzling and that was winding down. With the help of our umbrellas we thought we would stay dry. Wrong. Lightening danced around and the thunder was deafening; followed by a torrential downpour! After walking close to buildings and huddling under our umbrellas while singing a few more choruses of “Transylvania, Here I Come!” we reached the center of town.

We were pretty much soaked to the skin and chilled to the bone but we found a charming restaurant. Everything here reminds us of Germany so we were not surprised to find chicken, pork and beef schnitzel on the menu. It was a white tablecloth restaurant – a little on the elegant side but our meals were about $7 - $8 each in American money! We expected it to be more than double that amount. Richard and Caitlin had been so kind to help us “old people” drag our luggage around that Bill treated them to dinner which was quite a surprise to them!

After we finished eating the rain had stopped and it was still daylight (actually more daylight than when we left the hotel because the gray skies had cleared up giving more light) so we walked through a few of the little town squares. We fell in love with the Brasov part of Transylvania. The buildings were from the early 1500's! We discovered so many awesome churches and architecturally beautiful buildings. We took pictures by the old city gate and roamed through a gated cemetery. We even explored the first school in Romania!
