I do this as well, but for my Washi tape. The 12" long ones (I buy then at Bed Bath & Beyond) fit perfectly into the 12x12 Iris storage boxes, and you can get about 6 of them into each box.

I store my smaller spools of ribbon in individual cutlery trays. They are the perfect width and the come in a variety of lengths. If money were no object, I'd love a Teresa Collins StudioBox.
