The place was fascinating. It was much larger than I expected – too much ground to cover on foot, we were driven in our van from one point of interest to the next on the ancient site.

The first stop was the Moon Temple. It was interesting to see but the history was chilling. The Moon Temple was where approximately 200 girls and women lived. They were chosen or specifically selected as little girls for one of 3 roles in life and they knew from the time they were selected and placed here which group they were in.

One group of young girls was to live a life of celibacy and take on the role similar to a nun but to be devoted to the gods.

Another group was prepared to be the wives of very wealthy men and leaders. They spent many years, from when they were small children in this facility being prepared for marriage to someone important like a government leader or official.

The remaining group was little girls selected were to be sacrificed to the gods when they were of age, which could be as young as 14 years old but as old as 30. How chilling to know from childhood that you were being prepared to be a human sacrifice to the gods!

No matter which of these 3 roles their daughters had been chosen to fill, the parents were honored to have their daughters selected. I just cannot even start to imagine what it would be like to be told that my 8-year old daughter had been selected to go live in an isolated temple to be prepared to be a sacrifice to the gods when she turned 14 but from what our guide told us, it was completely accepted by the parents. In fact the parents were very proud!

In the temple were symbols which represented menstruation because that was a symbol of women.

A gate spanned from one side of the little road to the other at the entrance to the Moon Temple. Male guards were posted to keep all males away from the Moon Temple. To be a Moon Temple guard, it was required that the guard be castrated before he could serve in that position.

If any other male attempted to get to the Temple where the 200 females were housed they were immediately killed, his family was killed and his neighbors were killed.
