Never in a million years would I have picked this as a tourist destination. Never was it on my bucket list!

However, after spending the day here, I'm glad we stopped in this port. It gave me just a glimpse into the lives of people who live in such a drastically different culture than mine. Before, places like this were just pictures in a magazine, book, or on TV documentaries. They never took form in my mind as being real.

The children were curious but they knew what cameras were and loved to have their picture taken. In fact the adults loved having their picture taken just as much. All we had to do was hold up the camera and they smiled and posed.

Whenever we have formal night on the ship there are hundreds of helium balloons decorating the dining rooms. One of the servers told me they blew up around 600 balloons for special events and evenings. Bill always makes it a point to make several trips to the dining room to rescue as many of the balloons as possible before they pop them and dispose of them. Sometimes we have over 50 balloons floating up near the ceiling of our cabin with ribbons dangling down.

When we arrive in port, especially ports plagued by poverty like this one, Bill takes as many balloons as he can manage and gives them out to the children. You could tell that some of the children had never seen helium balloons before.

Visiting a port like this makes me feel very blessed for what I have at home.
