Love the use of the black matting! Glad you were able to walk into town - though that drop off sounds dangerous. I am glad there was one money exchange open - it would have been very frustrating otherwise!
It sure is different on those smaller islands. Good to read you finally got to exchange money and not have to walk back. I probably would have tried walking into town also. You got some nice pictures!
see I wouldn't even try walking that far - but good for you - I would have just lounged on the deck of the ship and waited for beach day! I love how adventurous you are and you always get such great photos.
The sidewalks between the port and the town have a steep drop-off into a concrete drainage ditch with a little bit of water in it all along the edge of the sidewalk so we had to pay attention to where we were walking almost all the way to town. The sidewalk was uneven because there were so many cracks so much broken concrete that was at angles just waiting to trip people. Just one unbalanced step could have landed us in a fall 4 or 5 feet and into the ditch. There was no rail or anything separating the sidewalk from the drop-off. Very unsafe!
Once we got past the port area, it was so frustrating to see one bus after another pass by us when every passenger from our ship wanted to get on. None us had local money so we all had no choice but to walk in the almost unbearable heat.
Once we arrived in town we walked to one money-changing place after another but they were all closed for the day. Closing time here is around 4:00 and it was only shortly after 3:00. We found out they take “island time” seriously - just because signs say “Open until 4:00” – it doesn't necessarily mean 4:00 on these little islands. They close when they are ready to go home, no matter what time it is! Finally we found one place that was still open and got enough local money for today and tomorrow.
Then we tried to find a place with internet so we could check our email. That wasn't easy – we walked what seemed like forever (considering we were already hot and tired) until we found an internet café. At least it was air conditioned and the internet connection was fast.
Next hassle – to find a bus back to the ship. Now that we had local cash, we weren't going to walk back to the ship! We walked a few blocks to the bus terminal and tried to find a bus back to the port. There isn't one. We finally found a bus that was going half-way to the ship so we rode it that far, got off and hailed a cab to take us the rest of the way to the ship. If Bill had been by himself, I know he would have walked back but I just couldn't make it. My knees were shot and I was completed flushed by the heat! Expecting tomorrow to be awesome - we are going to the beach!
