oh wow, I agree with henri, that bottom left photo is insane. What an interesting story. I'm sure someone's head rolled over this debacle. Couldn't have been cheap to abandon such a huge building project
I love the lower left photo - gives an idea of size. Great perspective. I didn't know there was an unfinished obelisk. How fortunate to discover it like this in the process of construction to give us an idea of how they built these mammoth structures. Even with these clues, there is still so much we don't no about the early Egyptian and the things they built. We don't even know with certainity how they built the pyramids so this is indeed quite a find not only for the historical significance, but for the insight into method of construction.
Because this abandoned obelisk was discovered, we know how the ancient Egyptians carved their obelisks. This obelisk was massive and it is hard to imagine how much work must have gone into it, only to abandon the project.
