Title page for Longyearbyen. We are in polar bear country now. We are limited where we can go because if we get outside the town at all, there is risk of running face-to-face with a polar bear. Polar bears are extremely aggressive and dangerous. People here are armed and all the little shops have weapons because the polar bears do sometimes wander into town.

The little area you see behind us is pretty much the entire town.

It cover a little bit more than you can see, but not much!

There are "beware of polar bear" signs everywhere. Many of the stores have stuffed polar bears in them and of course, the polar bear we are posing with is stuffed.

If you want to go outside the little town, you have to first go to the police department and fill out paperwork that you can handle and be responsible for a firearm. You then have to rent a gun from the police department.

Then you can go outside the little town. You have to be armed! Or you can hire an armed guard to take you outside the town or go on a planned excursion, but those are also required to have armed guards.

They take polar bear threats very seriously!
