The Turtle Farm or Turtle Sanctuary is nestled on a small section of land off the west coast of Isla Mujeres. Visitors walk around indoor and outdoor pools to observe young turtles (from newly hatched up to one year of age). Expert guides educate guests about the turtles' stages of development and evolution of the species.

Since the creation of the center, tens of thousands of sea turtles have been released.

The Turtle Farm is located on the southern part of the island and is supported by Mexican government and depends heavily on private funds.

We learned several years ago that if the turtles hatch on the beach without human intervention, very few make it to the ocean or even past the first day. Estimates are that only 1-3% will survive. With the turtle preservations programs, it is estimated that as many 50% survive and live long healthy lives!

Since there are no seahorses in the sanctuary, only turtles, the seahorses on the building were odd to us.
