I didn't know a tsunami hit the island and created such havoc. Looking at the clock frozen in time (no pun intended) is really eerie. They have sure made a beautiful memorial to all the people who lost their lives here. Bill looks good just handing out. I agree with BK...the wonderful pastel tropical colored papers really bring out the beauty of the place and the flowers. Super duper job!
What a fascinating story. Your 4-page layout is wonderful. I really like the way you used the tropical pink and green papers, picking up the colors of the plants & flowers in this photo.
The tall green clock at the edge of Banyan Golf Course stopped at 1:04 in the morning on May 23, 1960. Its gears don't move anymore, the hour and the minute are frozen on the face of the clock. It's now a monument commemorating the lives of those lost the day the clock stopped, when a tsunami swept through Hilo, killing 61 people, leveling homes and shops, and destroying the waterfront area.
Picture on the left is Bill standing next to the clock. We were told that this clock is the only thing in this area that survived the force of the waves that hit that day.
The waterfront area was demolished!
There is a tsumani museum in Hilo which we have not visited yet, but will on one of our trips.
We ate at one restaurant and noticed several lines on the wall and then realized it was marking the water levels from the tsunami! That was eerie! That was the first time I grasped how high the water came!
Around town are signs that claim if a spot is a tsunami evacuation area and what to do if there is a tsunami approaching.
