About the process:
I struggled with this one, and it took me 3 days of careful thought to figure out what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to play off the colors in the sunset. I broke into my stash and found two patterned papers with a desert southwest vibe in the right palette. I layered them on the top and bottom of the page. Then I added 2 strips of glitter tape from the Michaels impulse bins, and a bit of rat tail ribbon I found on clearance at Walmart.
That's where I got stuck the first time, because it didn't look unified. I decided to layer some texture paste over the joints between the two patterns, and add sprays (Distress Mermaid Lagoon, and Tattered Angels Cherry). I think that worked pretty well, but it left me with an empty center band, no title, and not a clue what to do to bring attention to my main image.
So, I hauled out Cricut Design Space. The title was simple - type, weld, cut, add some Tattered Rose Distress Ink and Wink of Stella, and done. The flowers were a little more involved, because I've never done layered dimensional flowers before. The flowers are all one cut file at three different sizes. I added some distress inks (Salty Ocean on the blue, Tattered Rose on the pink), and Wink of Stella before I curled the petals around a pencil. Then I glued the layers together, but they still looked plain, so I added some gems I found at Dollar Tree, and Liquid Pearls in the center.
To mat the main photo, I sprayed Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist Cherry and Distress Stain Mermaid Lagoon on watercolor paper. I finished the layout off with a Recollections date stamp and Staz-on Midnight Blue in the top left corner, and journaling with a Staedtler midnight blue pen.
About the photos: Sunsets at White Sands National Monument are dramatic. My husband and I were passing through the area on our way back home (SE Texas) and just couldn't resist popping-in for some sunset shots. The partly cloudy early-June sky gave the sun a lot of cloud formations to play with that evening.
