Christopher died in Spain but did not want to be buried in Spain. He was emphatic that he did not want to be buried in Spanish soil. After his death, Spain wanted to keep his body in the country, but didn't want to defy Columbus' wishes.

In order to keep Columbus' body in Spain, but not defy his wishes, his crypt is elevated so that it is being carried on the shoulders of 4 larger-than-life-sized statues who are on a large pedestal. It looks like they are carrying a coffin – and they are, with the body of Christopher Columbus inside!

This way he was kept in Spain, but not buried on Spanish soil. His body is lifted at least 14 feet off the ground. I wonder if this is what Columbus meant when he expressed not wanting to be buried on Spanish soil.

I did a good bit of research and learned that Santa Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, also believes they have the remains of the Christopher Columbus. but I personally believe that it is right here in the Seville Cathedral in Spain.
