One of Robert Allen Whitman first professional jobs as a photographer was for him to shoot an aspiring Minneapolis musician to try to attract a major label record deal. The 1977 photo shoot produced one of the most iconic early images of Prince at the very beginning of his career — a black-and-white portrait of him standing in front of the Schmitt Music mural in downtown Minneapolis. “He was just starting out and was very shy,” Whitman said. “Very, very shy, but once in a while he would give me a little attitude, and we got some good pictures.”

Although Schmitt Music has since moved, the mural remains intact. The music is from a piano piece written by French composer Maurice Ravel called Gaspard de la Nuit. The section depicted on the building comes from the third movement, Called “Scarbo.”
