Journaling: I bought my 3D printer with my Christmas money in January 2024. Ive used it a ton to make all kinds of random items to use around the house and for my craft projects. Im lucky that I can actually use my CAD software from work to design my own tools and parts, but one thing I didnt know how to do was add supports for anything that had shapes that overhang the layers below them. Everything needs a layer below it to build upon. I knew that supports was the term for what I needed, but I hadnt investigated it yet. Wyatt and I worked together to print a few items for his Dungeons and Dragons collection, but the more intricate models always gave a warning about needing supports. One weekend Wyatt found a model for a Beholder that he really wanted to print, so I finally took the time to research about supports. I watched a couple of great YouTube videos and learned about all the different types of supports. I opened the model in my software and realized I didnt have those options. I did a quick check to see if I had the latest version of the software and realized mine was really old. I did a quick update and then I had all kinds of options! Yahoo! I used Organic Tree supports for his first character and excitedly watched it print. The supports get smaller the closer they get to the attachment point and then barely touch so they are easy to break off after printing. I was SO excited after the first successful print. Wyatt loved his Beholder and even asked for some paint and a tiny paintbrush so he could paint the eyes and mouth. After that he learned to do it all on his own and is having a blast printing characters for Dnd!
