Kate, I first read your father's poetry as a 17 year old newcomer to Washington, D.C. As an underpaid secretary, I often ate at one of the "Hot Shoppes" restaurant chain and read the flyers placed on each table to fill the time while I waited for my meal. His poetry and stories were marvelous! I bought his first book sold by the chain and all the others as they came out. I still have most of those early books and they are ragged and well loved. They have inspired me and carried me through some very happy times and through extremely difficult times as well. Many of his poems have morphed into family sayings. Some poems have been shared as necessary to help others deal with joy and sadness. I know being the child of someone so loved and admired is challenging. Sometimes, however, it can be a source of gratification and I hope this is the case now. You obviously have inherited his artistic talent and joy of life.
I loved this picture of my dad and thought the verse he wrote about moods was the perfect match for it. I did it before in all black and white, but wanted to spice it up a little. He must have written this when he was young, for he really was a sea of kindness, patience and love as a father. It reads:
I have seen the sea when it is stormy and wild; when it is quiet and serene; when it is dark and moody. And in all its moods, I have seen myself.
