This was our dog Rusty - we (my Mom and Dad and I) had him from when I was a teen until after I married and had small children of my own. He was such a sweetheart! The pics show my Daddy with Rusty and me with Rusty back in 1974.

Journaling reads: "Rusty was a smart dog from day one. I guess he was what we would call "street smart". He showed up at our house in the middle of the night, rang the doorbell and sat there until we all came to the door. So, of course, we had to keep him. Over the years, I watched him as he would cross the busy highway in front of my parent's home. He would stop at the top edge of the high embankment, look both ways, wait for any cars to pass and then proceed across the road to his "girlfriend's" house. His girl was a black Lab named "Mama Dog". Inevitably, she and Rusty had a litter - over a dozen adorable pups - half of which had little bobbed tails like Rusty. Rusty was such a gentle dog, so friendly and loving. That's why I never understood what happened to him later. There were some mean teenage boys in the neighborhood, and they began to take shots at Rusty with their BB guns. Luckily, they couldn't do too much damage with those. However, when Rusty went missing, we had to wonder. He had been gone several weeks and we had about given up hope of him returning. One day Jerry was over close to his Mom and Dad's house and pulled up at a stop. When he looked up, there was Rusty beside the road. He opened the VW Bug door, called and Rusty jumped in. That was one happy day at our house. We'll never know for sure, but we heard a rumor that those boys had hauled him off and dumped him. It was just a miracle that Jerry found him, so many miles from home. Rusty had many other adventures over the years, but that was probably the biggest. He lived for many years and passed away peacefully at home. He was a good dog and is loved and missed to this day. ~~~ Photos taken February 1974"

The design for the layout is based on an page I did several years ago called "The Perdues". I used a mix of Jillybean "Dutch Mustard Soup" and Crate Paper "Farmhouse". The larger hearts are all hand cut and the tiny ones are punched. Some of the hearts are pop-dotted for dimension. Everything is inked in Chestnut (Colorbox). "Rusty" is done with stickers by Sassafras. The diamond shape is hand cut. The golden piece is punched with a Fiskars border punch. The big brad (w/leaves) is old, from my stash. Doodling was done with a dark brown pen. Thanks so much for looking.
