I've had this idea for a scrapbook series on the 23rd Psalm. I've wanted to do it for a while, but I did not know the owners of the local sheep farm. I drive past it every time I go to town, and I always love it when the lambs start arriving.
This year, I just decided to do it. I pulled into the driveway and got out of my truck. I looked around for the owner to introduce myself. She was back behind the house, working in the barn. I explained who I was, and told her about my idea - A Shepherd and the 23rd Psalm. I asked her if it would be ok if I came over one day and took some photographs of the ewes and their lambs.
She was the most lovely, most charming woman. She's elderly - maybe in her 70's or so - her name is Ida, and she LOVED my idea. She invited me to come any time.
I told her "I don't want to bother these mommas. What I hope to do is just sit down in the pasture and let the photos just happen." We talked about the ewes in the front pasture - there are 7 or 8 of them. She said, "it's the craziest thing. Every one of those ewes has triplets this year. I put them up front so I could tend them a little closer, because a ewe only has two faucets. I gotta make sure the little runts get plenty to eat so they'll grow..."
Boy does that fit right in with my "Lord is my shepherd" concept for this scrapbook.
Anyway - I went today and took some prelim photos just to see how the sheep would react to me. Once they figured out that I was not bringing the dinner, they could have cared less about me. The lambs weren't really busy - mostly they just laid around in the grass - but there were a couple of really decent "money shots" that I know I'll be able to use. I'll probably go back again when I get a better idea of exactly which shots I want to take.
