The Photo is actually a moon and cat I cut out of a paper crafting magazine (I think scrapbooks etc) from cardboard, painted it and wired the cat to swing around in the moon. It was for my daughter last year. Journaling reads:
Nurses are more superstitious than Haitian
There are general nursing superstitions, ones specific to your area, and ones specific to your facility.
Here are some of my favorites:
There is a cat at the one nursing facility. He often comes and lays on the bed of residents who are about to die. I think he helps them make the transition.
If someone is dying on your shift and you aren't ready for them to go yet, tie a knot
in the top right corner of their sheets and they will make it until you leave.
#3 People in facilities die in "3's". This one is true. It is usually within a week, but can be a month.
After someone dies, if they aren't ready to go on, they will often put the call light on
in their room asking for "help". I've seen this one happen myself alot.
At Geisinger, where I went to school, they say there is a ghost. It is Abigail Geisinger
the daughter (I think) of the founder. They say some nights they can see her.
Never, ever, under any circumstances say you are having a "QUIET" shift. It won't be any longer. #7
If you have a resident who has died, open the window to help the spirit escape. If I am not mistaken, this is a must for Jewish residents.
