There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears the human soul!
by Adelaide Love
A book, I think, is very like
A little golden door
That takes me into places
Where I've never been before.
It leads me into fairyland
Or countries strange and far
And, best of all, the golden door
Always stands ajar.
A Chemistry Poem
I'm reading a book by Jay WileSubmitted by: annie10102
That feels about as thick as a mile
It's a chemistry course,
And reliable source,
I sure am enjoying his style.
The characteristics we see
Of chemicals in chemistry
Are works of God's hand,
And part of His plan,
For the earth to function for me.
The way atoms all seem to dance
In molecules inside of plants
Is one of the ways,
God meant to amaze,
That couldn't have happened by chance.
Experiment with metals like chrome
Experiment with mixtures like foam
Please try to have fun,
Clean up when you're done,
I hope you don't blow up your home!
A Street Kid's Guide
Itís hard to get from here to thereSubmitted by: Fearless_714
If you never get out of bed.
You lie a lot to fool your friends
But you fooled yourself instead.
Itís harder to get from here to there
If you set your goals too high;
Then nothing ever works out right;
Too soon, you no longer try.
But the hardest way to get from here to there
Is when all you ever do
Is count up the years, and miles to go.
Then youíre through before youíre through.
So how do you get from here to there?
Well, you first must believe you can
Let no one tell you differently Ė
Itís your life and itís in your hands.
Then turn your dreams into your goals
And see what you need now
To satisfy the requirements:
The why, the where and how.
At first youíre overwhelmed, of course;
There is so much you donít know.
But keep your faith, be strong and sure,
For you do have a way to go.
Take careful steps and do them right,
Take pride in each thing done.
Donít look too far ahead of yourself,
Just that next step yet to come.
Before you know it youíll be there, friend,
Your dream will then be real.
And youíll be standing where I am now,
Telling others how good it feels.
Youíll tell them not to quit themselves,
To have faith, though itís hared to bear.
So they will know it can be done Ė
They, too, can get from here to there.

You always make me madSubmitted by: NewMommie12-22
you frusterate me and make me sad
But that didn't mean I didn't care
you hurt my feelings when I needed you and you weren't ever there
I cried for hours, nights and days,
sitting here while my heart decays
I thought I meant something to you,
But now I'm not sure I do
Why when you know I'm upset and sad
do you have to do soemthing to make me mad?
I needed you to comfort me,
I needed you to tell me"everything's gonna be alright you'll see"
But as of now, I'm alone left without anyone
I wish my life would end, be over, be done...

Comes the Dawn
"Comes the Dawn"Submitted by: april9529
"After a while you learn the subtle difference
between holding a hand and chaining a soul.
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning
and company isn't security.
(Kisses aren't contracts and presents aren't promises.)
After awhile you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes open,
with the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child.
And you learn to build your roads on today
because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain
and the inevitable has a way of crumbling in mid-flight.
After a while you learn that even sunshine burns
if you stand too long in one place.
So, you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone else to bring you flowers.
And you learn you really can endure,
that you really do have worth.
You learn that with every good-bye comes the dawn."

Everybodys Free to Wear Sunscreen
Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of í99Submitted by: ScrapNhappy
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be
it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
than my own meandering
experienceÖI will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh never mind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.
But trust me, in 20 years youíll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you canít grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really lookedÖ.Youíre not as fat as you
Donít worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing everyday that scares you
Donít be reckless with other peopleís hearts, donít put up with
people who are reckless with yours.
Donít waste your time on jealousy; sometimes youíre ahead, sometimes
youíre behindÖthe race is long, and in the end, itís only with
Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.
Donít feel guilty if you donít know what you want to do with your
lifeÖthe most interesting people I know didnít know at 22 what they
wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year
olds I know still donít.
Get plenty of calcium.
Be kind to your knees, youíll miss them when theyíre gone.
Maybe youíll marry, maybe you wonít, maybe youíll have children, maybe
you wonít, maybe youíll divorce at 40, maybe youíll dance the funky
chicken on your 75th wedding anniversaryÖwhat ever you do, donít
congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either Ė your
choices are half chance, so are everybody elseís. Enjoy your body,
use it every way you canÖdonít be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, itís the greatest instrument youíll ever
DanceÖeven if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.
Read the directions, even if you donít follow them.
Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents, you never know when theyíll be gone for
Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the
people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you
should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and
lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you
knew when you were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live
in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do youíll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders.
Donít expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
might run out.
Donít mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will
Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
But trust me on the sunscreenÖ

Sensitive, loyal and understanding
Humorous, fun, secure and true
Always there... yes that's you.
Special, accepting, exciting and wise
Truthful and helpful, with honest blue eyes
Confiding, forgiving, cheerful and bright
Yes that's you... not one bit of spite.
You're one of a kind, different from others
Generous, charming, but not one that smothers
Optimistic, thoughtful, happy and game
But not just another... in the long chain.
Appreciative, warm and precious like gold
Our friendship won't tarnish or ever grow old
You'll always be there, I know that is true

I have come into your world
about which I know nothing.
Why I came I know not.
How I came I know not.
I am curious

Ďcause the people would tell me, ďyouíll make it Ė just wait.Ē
But they never did tell me how great I would be
If I ever played someone who was greater than me.
When Iím in the back yard, Iím king with the ball.
To swish all those baskets is no sweat at all.
But all of a sudden thereís a man in my face
Who doesnít seem to realize that Iím king of this place.
So the pressure gets to me; I rush with the ball.
My passes to teammates could go through the wall.
My jumpers not falling, my dribbles not sure.
My hand is not steady, my eye is not pure.
The fault is my teammates Ė they donít understand.
The fault is my coaches Ė what a terrible plan.
The fault is the call by that blind referee.
But the fault is not mine; Iím the greatest, you see.
Then finally it hit me when I started to see
That the face in the mirror looked exactly like me.
It wasnít my teammates who were dropping the ball,
And it wasnít my coach shooting bricks at the wall.
That face in the mirror that was always so great
Had some room for improvement instead of just hate.
So I stopped blaming others and I started to grow.
My play got much better and it started to show.
And all of my teammates didnít seem quite so bad.
I learned to depend on the good friends I had.
Now I like myself better since I started to see
That I was lousy being great Ė Iím much better being me.
Lessons from a Dragonfly
(FYI: A dragonfly can spend up to several years underwater until it is strong enough to surface, shed its skin and evolve into this beautiful creature. Then it flies free among us but only for a very brief period of up to 2 months before it dies.)Submitted by: BugsNKisses
Poem: Lessons from a Dragonfly
A dragonfly accepts itís brevity of life
With its gossamer wings feeling the breeze
Full of freedom it watches our joy and our strife
Its wisdom learned flitting from water to air to trees
With wings that shimmer showing purpose and duty
Obedient to all of lifeís changes in flight
Modestly it shows us its outer beauty
Always gracious, mindful and full of delight
So whether what life gives you is good, bad, or sad
Show others that inner beauty counts and matters
Make your actions amount to many smiles and be glad
For the dragonfly knows it lives a brief life this way
So I learn from this creature to live wisely each day
And make every minute special to those that you love
As the dragonfly watches our actions from above
Everybody makes mistakes,Submitted by: soccrchicki
Though they try not to for others sakes,
My biggest mistake was when I gave you my heart,
I didn't know it but I was in the dark,
I thought that you were the one for me,
But the truth was something I couldn't see,
I discovered the truth and my heart was broke,
I didn't want to laugh or joke,
But after awhile I got over you,
I learned to accept myself more too,
Now I feel so sorry for the girl that you're with,
Because once a cheater always one and that's not just a myth,
But I don't regret anything from then,
If I could go back in time I'd do it again,
Because I had to learn everything,
That I learned, I had to find my wings,
So I could fly and not look back,
And realize there's nothing that I lack,
Mistakes are a part of everyone,
Without them nothing would ever get done.

Reasons WhySubmitted by: Bryansgyrl
Where am I today? I wish that I knew
'Cause looking around there's no sign of you
I don't remember one jump or one leap
Just quiet steps away from your lead
I'm holding my heart out but clutching it too
Feeling this short of a love that we once knew
I'm calling this home when it's not even close
Playing the role with nerves left exposed
Standing on a darkened stage, stumbling through the lines
Others have excuses, but I have my reasons why
We get distracted by dreams of our own
But nobody's happy while feeling alone
And knowing how hard it hurts when we fall
We lean another ladder against the wrong wall
And climb high to the highest rung, to shake fists at the sky
While others have excuses, I have my reasons why
With so much deception it's hard not to wander away
It's hard not to wander away
It's hard not to wander away

For the first time you were hurt by someone you love,

I want to a birthday partySubmitted by: Fearless_714
But I remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink at all,
So I had a sprite instead.
I felt proud of myself,
The way you said I would,
That I didnít choose to drink and drive,
Though some friends said I should.
I knew I made a healthy choice and
your advice to me was right
as the party finally ended
and the kids drove out of sight.
I got into my own car,
Sure to get home in one piece,
Never knowing what was coming,
Something I expected least.
Now Iím lying on the pavement.
I can hear the policeman say,
ďThe kid that cause this wreck was drunk.Ē
His voice seems far away.
My own blood is all around me,
As I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
ďThis girl is going to die.Ē
Iím sure the guy had no idea,
While he was flying high,
because he chose to drink and drive
that I would have to die.
So why do people do it,
Knowing that it ruins lives?
But now the pain is cutting me
Like a hundred stabbing knives.
Tell my sister not to be afraid,
Tell Daddy to be brave.
And when I go to heaven to
Put ĎDaddyís Girlí on my grave.
Someone should have taught him
That itís wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his mom and dad had,
Iíd still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter,
Iím getting really scared.
These are my final moments,
And Iím so unprepared.
I wish that you could hold me, Mom,
As I lie here and die.
I wish that I could say
I love you and good-bye.

The Gift: Teacher's Appreciation Day
When you light this candleSubmitted by: ScrapHappyInVegas
To guide you through the night,
Remember how you guided me
To make my future bright.
When you plant this seed
And nurture it to grow,
Remember how you nurtured me
And how much more I know.
When you see my photo
May you always think of me,
Remember YOU - That's what I'll do
You're what I aspire to be.
I wrote this poem to give to my son's teachers on Teacher's Appreciation Day and gave it with a small gift basket (you can also use a small terra cotta pot) that included a candle, a seed packet, and a school photo of my son. They loved it!!!

Iím turning 16, the world I begin to see.
My friend began to change, right before my eyes,
And now they seem to laugh, and tell all sorts of lies.
They hang around together in groups of three or four;
The language they useÖit isnít gentle anymore.
The kids that seem most lonely wind up in their pack,
And those that stand alone, they talk behind their back.
Somehow I feel rejected because I donít conform.
Those that step to their own beat donít seem to be the norm.
Iíve watched a few just fade away with drugs and alcohol;
And many more have given up, too many to recall.
Alcohol is an option for everyone in my school.
Iíve lost a friend to booze again; I will not be a fool.
And sex. Ti seems so open, for everyone to explore.
Three girls I know that came to school donít come here anymore.
If only I could make a difference, what could I do or say?
I would go to school and try my best each and everyday.
There is one thing Iíd like to do before I graduate.
Iíd like to touch them one by one before it is too late.

It helps you to think, it helps you to see.
Lifeís full of twists and turns will abound,
But wonder and insight can guide you around.
Explore what you may and fill up your mind,
And hold in your heart the mysteries you find.
Wonder is only saying you yearn
To know and select the things that you learn,
And making a choice in which way you turn.
The best path you take will always be right,
Each new step you take when you listen and hear
Will give you more courage and freedom from fear.
So wonder my child, rid of your doubt,
And you will rejoice with how you turn out.
And though you may fall and struggle, too,
Know that Iíve been there, and will always love you.

We face the mirror with only our face on display.

Names and faces forgotten but remembered with heartbeats ..
Those youthful mistakes we shall never regret today..
Bravely facing to say I fell once but I guess fate raised me back!!
To laugh at those traces of love .. all a part of you left behind..
My life will never throw away those times of careless laughter..
All those tears going nowhere in despair but .. never my love !!
A part I might have left behind but lives on with every passing.
Never lose your youthful memories .. never shelve to forget..
They are you..once upon a time .. the daring the bold the child!
It brought about the lessons of heartache and defeat..
But it opened the road to forgiveness and lessons learned.
Charms ..loveliness .. treasures can never buy a sweet deal..
Fate has no measure of possibilities but only what is destined..
To live with pardonable truth, learning to accept messages of life
Standing back as tall as your pain .. paint the moment of truth.
Your youth is where you begin to the best you can ever be today..
Yesterday, the heart was bold to try and dares consequences..
Today .. comes with lessons learned and display the older you..

You have to Be Quiet before you can Talk
You have to Look before you can Find
You have to take a Step before you can Walk
You have to Give before you can Get
You have to Live before you Die
