I Am Not Emo Anymore (story, not a poem)
A lot of people said it would happen someday…though, no one really believed it actually would. But, that kid in East Way proved to us that it’s not whether you’re emo or not, you still have feelings.

No one ever went down the dead end road in East Way just because there was this one family who was poor, and everyone was afraid of them because, well, they weren’t like everyone else. But another family obviously didn’t mind at all. Because moving to town, they chose that dead end road faster than they picked a name for their kids. East Way was just “that” kind of town. It was a preppy place, girls wore skirts, boys wore jeans, end of story. Well, not this one.
The Black family came to East Way by force. There was “no more room” in the town of Westville and since they’d been there the longest, they were required to move. So Damian and Demetra had to find a way to adjust. Damian was a thirteen year old boy who was probably the nicest one you’d ever find. Demetra was a tomboy, a fifteen year old teenage girl.
Damian’s hair was black and blonde. It was a black side cut that covered one of his eye and that was one half of his hair. The other side was a blonde buzz cut. It was really cute. He started wearing eyeliner before Demetra and still is. Sometimes he wears heavy eye shadow. His clothes are black, with regular boy jeans. His shirt under his black jacket was white and black striped. His shoes were converse, black and white. He only had two friends back at his old school because all the others classified him as “emo”.
Demetra was an awesome athlete. She played basketball and soccer and she wrestled until she was nine. She plays softball in the summer and played football with her guy friends from her old school on the weekends. She also was on the field hockey team and did field and track. She can sing and dance, she also acts for videos that her and her friends do and post online at www.epictube.com. Demetra and her brother are very close.
Their first day of school.
Going to East Way Middle School was another death chamber in Damian’s mind. He didn’t want to make new friends. His old ones were just fine. When he walked in the school doors, a huge crowd of students his age all immediately stopped whatever it was that they were doing and looked right at him. He looked at all of them with his gray eyes and then looked over his shoulder, thinking he should run back. But he faced them all and walked to his newly assigned locker. Hoping no one would notice him looking at them, he looked through the mirror on his locker door to everyone behind him. They were all looking at him.
Every girl had on some type of skirt that was shorter than her knees, and two tank tops. One was white, the other was any other color. Their hair was either blonde or brown. Their shoe wear was either sandals or high heels.
All the guys had blue jeans on or plaid shorts. Their T-shirts matched whatever bottoms they were wearing. None of them had their ears pierced. Their shoes were all tennis shoes. White.
Damian looked around, trying to figure out why everyone was the same. But his eye caught a girl that was sorta different. She had a black skirt on and she had on two tank tops, one was white and underneath it was a black one. Her bra straps were red, adding color to her outfit. She also had on black heels, not as high as all the other high heeled shoes and she had Black hair, put up in a messy bun. She wore eyeliner and wore red lipstick which complimented her extremely pale skin. She noticed Damian looking at her and quickly disappeared behind more people and then into another room.
Damian walked by himself to class and sat by himself in class at the back of the room. He ate lunch by himself and sat at a study hall table by himself. He was alone.
Damian also walked home by himself. When he got home, he noticed his sister talking about how many friends she made that day and all the sports she joined and that she needed their mother to sign this and that. Damian was a little jealous but that wasn’t the reason he locked himself in his room for the rest of the day.
Demetra knocked on his door around midnight. “Damian, you wanna talk about today?” she asked him.
Damian didn’t answer.
“Please?” she asked him and expected a reply this time.
Damian got up and opened the door without saying anything.
“Look, I know it will be harder for you to make friends because I saw what this school is like. Everyone’s the same. But you will find a friend. I promise.”
Damian still didn’t say anything. He looked up from his wrist and stared at his sister. His eyes made her look down.
“You know, no girl can resist your eyes. You should just look them straight in the eyes and hole your arms out because I’m sure she’ll fall for you.”
Damian smiled and Demetra thought he laughed a little too. He smiled at her and looked at her again. She smiled back and walked out of the room. When she had gone, his smile slowly faded and he didn’t look back at his wrist.
Damian got up from his bed and turned on the radio. He turned on Famous Last Words by his favorite band and fell asleep to it.
In the morning, Mrs. Black called down Demetra and Damian for breakfast and then they headed off for school. Demetra and Damian separated to go their own schools, Damian went to the middle school, Demetra the high school.
Damian saw that girl right away when he walked into the school. Once again, everyone stared at him. He walked to his locker again.
During lunch, he wasn’t alone for long this time. The football team quarterback accompanied him.
“Look, dude, Halloween is in three months so you can take off your costume!” he started laughing and then walked away, after spilling his noodles on Damian on purpose.
“Just shove it, Brian!” that girl said as she walked past him.
“Hi, I’m Demi. I know its probably hard on only your second day but I just want to say, don’t feel intimidated. You’re only considered different because everyone is the same around here.” she said sitting next to Damian.
He looked at her but her smile wouldn’t go away. Instead, she smiled bigger.
“You know, your eyes are gorgeous. I’ve never seen anyone with gray eyes before. Anyways, If you need help finding your way around, just ask.” she said and with that, the bell rang and she was gone.
Before dismissal, Damian walked back to his locker. He took a pin and poked the top of his arm, just below his shoulder. As the bell rang, he walked out of the school with blood dripping down his arm. Everyone watched and the nurse even tried to stop him. He just kept walking and never turned back.
When Damian got home, he didn’t lock himself in his room. Instead he went in the basement and sat in the corner. The blood dried up and he cleaned it off. His black cat walked up to him and lay by his side. He looked down at him and smiled.
“Hey Gee,” Damian greeted his cat.
Demetra walked downstairs by him and sat down.
“So, how was school?” she asked with a smile on her face.
“Good I guess, it sucked.” he answered.
*Gasps* “I get an answer today?? Wow, I’m surprised!” *laughs* “Just kidding,” she joked with him.
“Am I emo?” Damian asked.
“Emo? No, I would not classify you as emo. Just like punk or something. But that’s ok, you’re not Damian unless you’re who you are.” she said and got up and walked upstairs.
Damian looked back down at his cat and smiled and kept petting him. Then he decided to go to bed and walked back up stairs.
When he fell asleep, he dreamed. He dreamed of a foggy, clouded, gray world. Debris was all over on the sides of him and in-between the giant piles of it was a path that was wide enough for a parade to go through. Suddenly a single float came down that path. It was a giant trailer thing with red drapes, which was the only color in his dream. Then there was a skull on the front of the float. On top of the float was a band in uniform. They played a parade song that was about where you go when you die if you become the savior of the broken, the beaten, and the damned. You go to the “Black Parade”.
Damian woke up with a startle. He was sweating and scared. He looked out the window and it was pouring out. The trees were falling down and the tree fort was about to break.
The tree fort is where Damian and Demetra keep their most cherished childhood memories and whenever they are depressed, they go there.
“Damian, are you ok?” Demetra asked him…so she was the reason why he woke up.
“What is going on?” he asked her.
“You were sweating like a pig! Are you ok? You’re not going to die, ok? I promise, you’re fine.” she told him.
“Wait, how did you know I thought I was going to die?” Damian asked confused.
“You were dreaming and talking in your sleep. ’Is that where I’m going when I die? Am I the savior of the broken?’ which I really don’t understand at all.” she told him.
Damian started crying and Demetra hugged him. They were there until it was time to wake up for school the next morning. Demetra fell asleep in Damian’s room.
Damian and Demetra looked out his window. Almost all of the trees were torn down by the storm last night. But the one tree that didn’t look damaged at all was their tree fort. They smiled at each other and walked downstairs even though they were exhausted.
They both grabbed their lunches and headed off to school.
Damian walked in the door and no one looked at him this time, except for Demi.
“Hi, welcome to your third day here, may I accompany you to your locker?” she asked playfully.
Damian smiled and nodded softly.
“So, do you ever talk? At all?” she asked him.
“Yea, not much.” he told her.
“Oh, I see. So what makes you feel so lonely here?” she asked him, curious.
Just as she said that, Brian, the football quarterback walked up behind her and touched her butt.
“Brian!” she yelled.
“So, Emo boy, I’m kinda of thirsty for some punch. Can you go get me some? And trust me, I can tell when you use your blood so don’t try that on me!” Brian said to Damian.
“Ugh! You know what Brian? BUZZ OFF!!” she stepped on his foot.
“Man! You stomp hard!” he says and then turns to Damian. “You know on second thought, I think I want some water instead. Can you like fill up a glass with your tears? I hear its more healthy!” he said and walked away.
“Oh my gosh, don’t listen to him. He puts down everyone, even the captain of the soccer team, Brad. You’re not the only one so don’t feel bad about it. Hey, I know, you should meet Katie! She doesn’t put down anyone, she’s the nicest person ever, I’ve never seen her say anything mean to anyone.” Demi told Damian.
“Hey, Katie, come here!” she yelled.
Katie turned and as soon as she saw Damian, her smile faded away. She walked up to them slowly.
“Umm, hi Demi.” she said quietly.
“Hi, Katie, this is my friend Damian, he’s new.”
“Oh, uhh, hi emo boy.” she said and giggled to herself and walked away.
“Oh my God, Damian, I’m so sorry!” she said and quickly walked away.
Damian watched her go and closed his locker. He slowly began to cry. But he didn’t want anyone to see so he went in the corner of the hallway and skipped class. After that, it was dismissal so he just went home and today Demi didn’t even try to say goodbye.
He walked in the door of his house and slammed the door. Demetra saw him hurry to his room.
“Damian!” she called for him and followed him up the stairs.
“Are you ok? What happened at school?” she asked him concerned.
“Nothing.” he said angrily and started tearing up again.
“If it was nothing, you wouldn’t seem so heart broken. What’s wrong?” she asked.
“Nothing! Its just, I wish I wasn’t so different, I wish I wasn’t emo.” he told her.
“Damian, being the same as everyone else never makes anything better don’t you know that? You are so much more then you can see! And you are NOT emo. You never were. And if you are, its just a style. There’s nothing wrong with it! I only wish I was emo so I could express myself the way you can. Just be proud of yourself so you’re not the only one that isn’t. And I would never call you emo, everyone that does is just jealous.” with that she walked out of the room.
Damian smiled but it quickly disappeared and he cried into his pillow all night. Around 3:00am he got up and went into the bathroom and took his sister’s razor. He walked back up to his room and held it close to his wrist. He was shaking but he wanted to end his life. He wanted it all to end!
He thought back to what his sister said. “You are so much more then you can see!”, “Just be proud of yourself so you’re not the only one that isn’t.” All the things his sister said made him pull the razor a little farther away from his wrist until finally, he dropped it on the floor. He breathed for a while and then put the razor back in the bathroom. He went to bed after that.
After school the next day, Damian and Demi met at the park. She apologized for the way Katie acted and just told Damian to forget about Brian. She looked at him in the eyes again.
“Damian, you really do have the most amazing eyes in the world. I wish I had them,” she said to him.
He looked back at her and smiled. “You really make me feel different.” he said.
She looked at him and smiled. “Well I try to make you feel better then what people tell you that you are. You are none of that.” she told him
Damian thought about his sister. She was truly his best friend and she helped him through it all. Demi was a great help and a great friend but nothing could stand up to his sister. “Well thanks. You are my only friend here besides my sister.” he told her.
Demi was flattered. “Wow, thanks.” she said and looked down, still smiling and seemed a little nervous.
Damian kept looking at her and they kept on swinging on the swings. He got off and went by her and she looked up.
“What?” she asked a little startled as to why he got up.
Damian took her hand and pulled her to the stream in the woods. They walked the path until they got there. He pulled her along with him as they jumped rocks until they got to the big one in the middle of the stream. They sat down. He took both of her hands and pulled her close. She looked at Damian’s eyes and they were sparkling.
“Beautiful eyes,” she whispered.
Damian kissed her. After that they sat there awhile and he felt nervous but happy. He hadn’t felt that way in a long time.
They noticed some storm clouds rising so they decided to go home. When Damian got home, his sister was there. They went in their tree fort.
It was dark and kind of deserted. But they saw pictures of them at their old house and with their old friends. They both smiled at the memories and Demetra even cried a little. They stayed in there for hours until they heard the thunder and felt the shaking.
“We gotta get out of here!” Demetra yelled and they ran towards the house and into the basement. This was going to be a bad thunder storm and tornados were on their way.
“Wait! Damian! Our memories! The tree fort! I can’t let those go, Damian, I can’t!” she cried.
“Demetra don’t be serious! You can’t go out there! You’ll get killed!” he yelled.
She just looked at him longingly and ran back outside. He grabbed a footstool and looked out the window at her. She was running towards the tree fort. She got under it and was about to climb the ladder. But suddenly a tree fell and landed on her. Damian saw her hand sticking out from under the tree. It looked blue and it slowly rose and waved. Then it landed on the ground.
Damian fell to the ground and cried. He cried all night. When the storm finally stopped and the ambulance finally left, Damian took a razor and a piece of paper and pencil to the stream where him and Demi were earlier that day.
He took the razor and held it above his wrist. He thought of about his sister. She always told him to have hope but without her, hope was lost. He cut himself. As he bled himself to his own death, he wrote Demi:
As you read this blood stained note, I just want you to know that I love you and that kiss meant the world to me and always will. But I can’t bear the death of my sister and I can’t live without her. Tell Brian he can have anything in my room he wants and tell Katie she is very beautiful. But you are the most amazing girl I have ever met and I will never forget you and I hope you never forget me. I’m fading away quickly so I just want to say this:
I am not emo anymore, I’m an angel.
Love always and forever,
p.s Don’t forget me
Demi got the note. She cried her eyes out and framed Damian’s note. She never through it away. Since that very day, she helped other “emo” kids and she protected them with everything in her power. She really loved Damian and always will. That’s why she now believes that “emo” is just a style, and the best one in the world.
