MY METAPHOR FOR MY AMERICAN FLAG~
BY DANIEL AGBOGIDI~ 15FEB07~

ONE NATION UNDER GOD...

CALM, SERENE PEACE
RIGHT BEFORE THE SIRENS SOUND.

~ NOW ONLY THE THUNDEROUS TRAMPLE
OF RUBBER SOLED BOOTS SCRAMBLING TO THEIR POSTS

COUPLED WITH THE DEAFENING
QUICKENING RATE OF THE THROB
FROM MY HEART IN ITS CAVITY
THAT IS MY CHEST
AS THE CONSTRICTING MUSCLE POUNDS.

BEFORE I CAN ABOUT-FACE TURN AROUND TO RUN,
HOT METAL RIPS ITS WAY INTO MY UNSUSPECTING SHOULDER
WITH THE IMPACT THAT MAKES MY WHOLE BODY HALF TWIST SPIN
LIKE WHEN THEY ASSASSINATED JOHN LENNON.

BUT BEFORE I CAN START THINKING ABOUT " YESTERDAY "
AND HOW " ALL MY TROUBLES SEEMED SO FAR AWAY"
IT STARTED TO "SEEM AS IF THEY WERE HERE TO STAY"

AS PAIN FROM ANOTHER SIZZLE SOUND
PENETRATES ME SOMEWHERE IN MY INCREASINGLY NUMB TORSO
AND I CAN SMELL THE SCENT OF MY OWN BURNT SKIN AGAIN...

~ A HOLLER TO A WHISPER,
A RAIN DROP TO A RIVER...

AMBER STREAMS OF RED LEAVE ME AND SOAK MY SUIT.
NOT THE TAILOR SEWN ONE WORN BY MY FATHER WHEN HE DIED,

BUT THE UNIFORM OF MY FORE FATHERS
THAT SO MANY HAVE DRAPED AROUND THEIR FRAGILE FRAIL FLESH
WHEN THEY TOO HAVE CRIED THEIR LAST CRY.

WHITE STARS BLANKET MY AERIAL CANVAS
APPEARING SEEMINGLY SMEARED
WITH MILKY STREAKED DISTORTION IN MY FADING VIEW.

TEAR TATTERED EYES FILLED WITH FLUID
BEGIN THEIR JOURNEY ON AN UPWARD ASCENT
AS THEY ROLL BACK IN MY HEAD,
TRYING TO FOCUS ONE LAST TIME
ON SKIES OF BLUE THAT I ONCE KNEW
AS THE COLOR LOSES ITS HUE.

MY RAPID INHALING HAS SLOWED
TO A SHALLOW SILENT STRUGGLE
AS I GASP FOR A DESPERATE BREATH TO BREATHE.

IF THE EYES REALLY ARE WINDOWS TO THE SOUL,
THEN SOMEBODY HAS PULLED THE SHADES CLOSED

AND I'M FAILING AT TRYING TO FIGHT OFF THE FEELING
OF FALLING ASLEEP THAT'S COME OVER ME
AS MY ARM EXTENDS WITH FINGERS STRETCHED OUT
ATTEMPTING TO GRASP MY FLEEING LIFE
THAT HAS EVADED THEIR REACH.

MY LIFE LOST FOR MY COUNTRY
LIKE THE LIFE OF THOSE LOST IN THE PAST.

OUR FAITH EMBEDDED
IN THE STITCHED FABRIC
OF THE AMERICAN FLAG
