I had been using the Heatwave pen, that is operated with batteries. I love that pen! I have horrible penmanship, and even my husband was impressed with my writing using that pen. He thought someone else wrote the words for me, using the tool.
This is exactly like that pen, and yet not. These pens, that you can buy in a kit, or individually, operate via a USB connection. The navy blue tip is the bold tip, and that one is just like the Heatwave pen I mentioned above. The other two each have a slightly smaller tip. Since this set for three cost the same as buying the other two individually, I opted to just purchase this set. The Heatwave pen operated by batteries will continue to be used. I can just pick it up and carry anywhere in the house without needing a connection to anything.
This set is just as AWESOME!!! I tried each pen and all worked perfectly. Very little time to heat up, no issues whatsoever! I really like that these are a lot easier to hold like a regular pen, much smaller area to hold and you don't burn your fingers getting close. I also like that there is a VERY small light on the cord end of the pen to let you know it is plugged in, and that there is NO light at the end of the pen as there is on the Heatwave tool. I found that light distracting. So they definitely made improvements with this updated style.
I already had a USB battery bank, so to start I just used that. Same one I use to charge my phone when I'm away from a power source. I also just purchased a device that plugs into a wall or power strip, that has both AC as well as USB. That thing works great! Just plug in one or all of the pens, heat them up for a few minutes and you are good to go! They have long cords, and I haven't had any issues with them coming unplugged while using.
Excellent set, in fact I purchased another for a relative for a birthday present. Also to note: I also purchased the other pen that is Calligraphy. It works just as great, my only complaint is that it should have been included in this set.
I love these! I have been playing with them almost everyday since I received them. I had ordered the regular quills and while I was shopping for those I came across these and instantly thought they'd be great for drawing. And I was right! I cant wait to accent some art with them.
I 100% would and have recommend these to someone. They are great! So far the Bold tip is my fave. I like that you can use it right side up for a nice bold line.. or on the side for a thin line. I havent played with the smallest one yet but I did like the standard one as well.
Love these pens...I can foil at night while watching TV so 8 can get ahead on my projects the next day. Love the different sizes so I can foil small areas as well as larger designs. This tool is revolutionary.....changing the way people craft
It works great! Wish I had better handwriting. I need to get several handwritten word stencils to use with it now!

Can you use Thermo web foil papers?

Therm O Web Deco Foil and Fancy Foils will not work with the Foil Quill because they use a transfer agent like ink toner or gel to apply the foil. I've used my Freestyle Pen with the foil from Crafter's Companion and the Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil rolls and it worked perfectly because those are special heat foils. :)

Hi, I would like to know if it is possible to also use this freestyle pen in the silhouette cutting machine. This kit does not come with the pen adaptor, right?

This is a handheld foiling pen not for use in a machine. Check out the original Foil Quill All-in-One Kit that can be used with electronic die cutting machines like the Silhouette right here:
What is the difference between these pens and the heatwave pen? Other than this requires USB charge and the heatwave takes batteries. .

The Freestyle pen has multiple tips that can be used and it is easier to hold like an actual pen in comparison to the thicker barrel of the Heatwave tool. Hope this helps!
