Altenew 36 Half pan watercolor & waterbrush & pallete

Would have given this a 5 stars, but I feel "Artist Grade" is misleading. Artist Grade paints have pigment numbers & conform to certain ASTM criteria with lightfast ratings etc. I would not recommend these paints for someone learning to watercolor, but I would recommend to a stamper wanting to paint their stamps over using markers or zig brush.

Anyway, I purchased this set to use on stamped cards while I'm vacationing. The color does shift quite a bit from wet to dry, so many colors require 2 coats. Youv'e got to be sure to water them down because they don't lift they stain the paper if used full strength or straight.

The paints don't flow or mix cleanly like if you want to make your own green, but you can get a brighter green by applying yellow over green.
I like the pastel colors on cards. The paints are Better than Artist Loft watercolor paints & are creamy & have strong color. But if you use them a lot, they won't last very long & I dont know if refills are available.

I wanted to buy some ink pads & see how well they work with a stamped object & then painted with the paint version, the few colors I looked up I couldnt find a matching ink pad, but I havent finished researching. I looked up a couple of the pinks.

I guess I got lucky with the case because my lid opens fine & lays flat. (Which Seemed to be an issue when I read reviews). I'm using the seperate plastic pallete you can buy & not using the lid to mix water & paint.

I think they did a nice job providing the watercolor brush, Id never used on before, but it works well as a brush, I haven't used the water dispenser part, But that will come in handy when I'm at the pool area painting & dont have a glass of water available. I also like that the paint names are provided on the bottom of the pans. These are welcomed additions, that marker companies dont provide & its very difficult to figure out what color is what without it.

If you are a stamper or like to doodle in a journal where you are not using watercolor paper you'll have fun with these, they work on watercolor paper too, but you dont need that much water and they didnt bleed on label paper. i stamped 36 roses on watercolor paper & painted them each in a single color. They did fine, but I actually like the vibrancy on 100 lb card stock. Then I painted several on sticker paper ( label) with ok results too.

If you have the money you'll find these fun to use. If you are looking for more "real" watercolors, I'd say for the same money buy Koi tube paints.

    Great set!

I have a multitude of watercolors, including high-end like Daniel Smith. This Altenew set is one of my favorite palettes. I love it!

    Brilliant Colors!

I am so thrilled with this watercolor set from Altenew. Honestly, they need a photo on their packaging that conveys how brilliant these colors truly are. The best part is mixing with your colors so actually, it's like having an endless rainbow of color, rather than just 36 choices. Mine came with a waterbrush and I was surprised as I didn't even realize one was included. I've been testing the colors and will be sharing my first project later this week. You will love this set!

    Watercolor Pan Set

I love the watercolor set. The colors are beautiful and they blend really well. It would be great if you sold refills , so you could replace a favorite color when it’s depleted.

    Altenew Watercolor 36 pan set

I wanted to try them out. Usually use Daniel Smith or MG. For the price these worked very well.

Does this include the case?   By: User (24-Aug-18) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • It does include the case. That is the weak point. The lid does not go flat but can be forced off and back on. The paints and colors are very nice and the price is right. By: BARL (25-Aug-18) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!

    • In reference to the comment about the lid; my lid does lay flat. I like the case :) By: nanettetracy (22-Oct-18) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!
