The 8.5x11x3" is more like a lunch bag so to speak in that it is 3" deep. The 13x13" envelope is flat. The 13" length and width make it ideal for keeping scrapbooking paper flat and organized. You can also include some thinner packs of elements to organize collections together (items such as laser cuts, rub-ons or ephemera packs). Hope this helps.

Hello. These are storage envelopes whereas the 8 1/2 x 11 are storage folders. These envelopes do not have a gusset and can hold individual papers but are not designed to hold complete pads.
