I understand each compartment has a magnetic backing. What I am trying to find out is if the compartments are open to the air or does the shadowbox have a glass or acrylic cover over the entire front of the box, thus enclosing and protecting the compartments.

Gotcha! My apologies:) There is no cover over the shadow box. The inserts are in the open air, allowing for quick change outs. Please let us know if you have any other questions! Thank you:)

Need a shadow box with shelves that fit tiny bottles about 2� high, 1-2� base. Will this box fit the bottles?
What covers the front of the wooden shadow box, that is, glass, acrylic, or something else?

The backer, or part that's shiny that you're seeing, is actually sheet metal. This is what allows the magnetized monthly inserts to stick to any part of the back of the frame.

Magnets do not come with the blank white or black shadow box frames. 7 self-adhesive magnets do come with the shadow box kit inserts for the frame. If you're hoping to create a custom look, not using one of the 17 shadow box kits, self-adhesive magnets can be purchases seperately in packs of 10. to complete a full frame 6-7 magnets are required. One magnet for each frame opening. (it is recommended that 2 magnets be used to secure the title opening slot, 2x11)
