      The metal cutting plate can be used in either situation but it is thinner than the plastic cutting plate so may need to be used in addition to it, depending on the dies.       I have the Big Shot only and I use this plate for intricate dies only. You keep the sandwich the exact same as when you use regular thin dies, which is platform, plate, paper, die, top plate. When using this as a shim, I assemble as platform, plate, metal shim, die with cutting surface UP, (never cut into the metal plate!!!), paper, top platform. It will be harder to crank thru the Big Shot but it will go thru, and I try to situate the die on an angle on the platform so I don't have a straight edge going into the Big Shot all at once.
