I love this machine. I waited years for something like this to come along and am so happy that it's just how I imagined it to be. Doesn't take up much space, easy to set up, cutting so far is flawless, lots of online tutorials. It's a bit noisy when cutting, but to me it's the sound of it saying "I'm finally here!". I read many reviews before purchasing and I know some have had issues with the stickiness of the mat or the blade cutting the mat or not cutting the paper correctly. There is a learning curve, but it is not huge or long-term if one stays calm and reaches out to learn from the experiences of others. Google rocks! I know this sweet little machine will take my card-making and projects to a higher level. Thank you Silhouette America! and thank you to my husband for a wonderful Christmas gift!
Digital die cutting made easy and affordable! I get a little tired of hand cranking my dies so when it was time to upgrade I knew I wanted a Silhouette, and the portrait was right in my price range. The machine is really sleek and attractive. I love that it has all the same features of the cameo but in a smaller package. The software was a snap to install on my Mac. I like that it came preloaded with dies. Also the tutorial DVD helped me quickly understand the software. You might wanna pick up the spatula when you order as the sticky mat holds onto all the little scraps. One thing you might want to do is take the mat and transfer a little lint from some jeans onto the mat; my first cut on the mat was so sticky that it tore some of the paper.

I did a lot of research on die cutting machines, and kept going back and forth between this and the Cricut. I'm SO glad I chose the Silhouette! This little machine has endless possibilities, and is just the coolest thing. I use this machine for stickers 90% of the time, but have done a few other projects with it. Silhouette Studio takes some getting used to(and a lot of googling and youtube videos), but once you get the hang of it, it's a lot of fun! I use the software for more than just cutting projects, I use it as a design program as well.
If you're considering taking the plunge, I say DO IT! Scrapbook.com shipped very quickly, and my products arrived unharmed(very unusual with my local PO)
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my new Portrait! Had a little trouble learning how to use it, but contacted Silhouette & they promptly responded & it is up & running. Beautiful clean cuts, easy to use. Images are downloaded for .99, so no need to worry about costly cartridges or storage!
I just recently purchased a Silhouette Portrait. It was easy to set up and I was able to begin using it immediately. It does take some time to figure all the features out and to use the downloads effectively...but what fun! I've been a scrap booker for years and enjoy learning new skills and finding new tools. This is one great cutting system.
I love my portrait. It's one of the best scrapbooking investments I have ever made. I love that I can create my own die cuts/word titles at the tips of my fingers!

Can you use vinyl in this?

Yes... Works the same as the Cameo, it's just the size that's different - the Portrait cuts up to 8-1/2" while the Cameo cuts up to 12"... That means for cutting vinyl, one dimension of what you want to cut must be that size or smaller, while the other dimension of your design can be larger - there is a roll feeder made by Silhouette that can feed the vinyl into the machine directly off the roll...
