Please note The Magic Mat is not magnetic.
I started making my own cutting pads out of self-healing mats about a year ago. (My husband helps me cut them using some shears from his toolbox.) It's difficult to do so this magic mat is a great idea and so I will probably buy one of these the next time I need one.
The self-healing mats work great and even emboss a little as they cut. However, they will still warp over time. When mine starts to warp, I hit it with my heating tool (the one I use for heat embossing) and it eventually flattens out. It takes a few minutes but it does eventually flatten out. This is so much better than the hard plastic mats that came with the cutting machine.
I have the Big Shot and it was a good fit. The big dies cut well and the thin dies also did well. I have the magnetic platform and it still worked through the Magic Mat. Overall I am very pleased with the performance of the Magic Mat.
I was skeptical, but tried it right after opening. This mat is beyond amazing!! It slides through, you think how could that be? No cracking and feels like no pressure, but it cuts like butter! Thank you scrapbook.com for am amazing produit!
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and get the Magic Mat! Saw some issues and decided to try it as soon as it arrived. Was concerned it was so thin but expected to have to try shims. NO! No shims required on my well-used machine. I have a Vagabond2 and from the first pass: Quieter working (less thuds now when a straight die side hits roller head on) beautiful clean cuts, lighter weight (for arthritis) and of course less plastic cut pad purchases. I only bought this extended and the mini and not surprised they flew off the shelf, but will be getting the standard size as well. Not frequent enough a game changer like this comes along!
I absolutely love my Magic Mat. I bought the extended version only because the standard version was already out of stock when I went to order it. It is so easy to use and the results are so much better than using 2 standard cutting pads. On a side note, I didn't attempt to use the mat before Scrapbook.com sent out the email giving people who purchased the product instructions on how to make the best cut, the key being to pass it through your machine 3 times. Thankfully, I was spared the frustration of figuring that out on my own. The Magic Mat picks up little details in my die cuts that I never even noticed were missing using two standard cutting pads. I will never go back to the old way. I plan to buy the standard Magic Mat when it is back in stock. I highly recommend this product.
I’ve had my mats (bought 2 different sizes) for about a week. I LOVE THEM. I have a Big Shot and it fits perfectly for all the sizes if wafer thin dies I’ve used. Cuts like butter, and is so smooth and quiet. 💗
To prevent overuse of sections, I marked the edges so I remember to flip and turn it each use.
Wow! Just wow! It is everything they promised and more! I am using this with a Big Shot Plus and incorrectly at that. I wasn't aware I needed to use both A and B adapters until I watched their video and it worked great! Imagine how much better it was when I used both.
I only need to run the dies through ONE time to get the details. There is no crunching noise AND it takes a lot less effort. Also, I wasn't getting the lines on my cardstock from previous cuts on the top cutting plate. After about a couple hundred cuts I did manage to warp the Mat but as their "answer" video showed, I just heated it with my heat tool and presto magic , it was back to straight! It really is Magic!
After ten days of using the Magic Mat everyday with a Sizzix Big Shot I'm thinking why the heck didn't someone think of this sooner? Love it! No matter how many "do this to prevent a warped cutting pad" videos I watched I still got a warped cutting pad within a month or two. I ended up getting the extended cutting pad as it was in stock. As I use a 13" platform it works great but does hang over about 1.5". The sandwich I use; a Sizzix Solo Platform, Solo Shim, and a Solo Thin Die Adapter, the Magic Mat, paper, die, then a plastic cutting pad. I've only used Sizzix Tim Holtz Thinlits and 99% have cut wonderfully with two passes. I does cut well with one pass I just do two due to the location of my Big Shot it is easier to get to the cuts if I just back the platform back up. The more intricate dies I tried running through 4 to 5 times with the Magic Mat and couldn't get a clean cut so I still pull out my Sizzix Chrome Precision platform for those dies. The only thing I'm a bit miffed about is the "self healing" aspect. I thought that meant that the cut lines would disappear after awhile, like overnight. Not so on my mat, each cut I've made the past ten days is clear as day. The more I look at it I think I need to take it to the sink and give it a good scrub as there is paper in some of the cut lines that won't just wipe off.
This out-performed the Sizzix precision base plate *IF* I also used the metal shim I have from spellbinders. I tested it using several of the Paper Rose floral dies like Ella’s Garden, Baby Blue Medium Outline, and Simple Leaf Duo. I also tried the Pinkfresh Leafy Branch. I like than many of the pieces cling to the magic mat when I picked the paper up. It just helps separate the pieces.
It also performed well without the shim, but I’d say it was just comparable to the precision base plate for intricate dies. I cut out several intricate dies at once and didn’t get full cuts in some places the first time, probably due to uneven pressure from my machine across a large area. The metal shim solved that completely, though. Several intricate dies at once and no problem. The more I use it with just one or two dies at a time, with the shim, the more I love it.
I’ll probably still reach for my precision base plate, too, but I’m glad I got this mat as another option for intricate dies.
This product is amazing!! I don't normally do reviews, so for me to feel compelled to do one, should tell you something. The Magic Mat far exceeds my expectations. I got the bigger mat & love it. I will be getting the medium sized mat when it's available. I would definitely recommend this product. So far I've only used it on my Sizzix Big Shot but I plan on using it on my Gemini too. Everything I cut so far came out beautiful. It really is a WOW product!!
