"This is the best, perfect size, easy to use paper trimmer. The cutter is extremely precise. Just put your paper in, hold the paper gently, the guard protects your fingers, the trimmer does the rest, perfect cut, accuracy is great. Thanks so much for this great product." - tundra10

"Love the compact size and how lightweight it is. Cuts beautifully, and it's perfect that it is also a self-sharpening blade. No more blade replacements needed. Perfect for compact work areas and taking to a crop." - KreatesKards

    HUGE issue with this trimmer!

And the fact that no else posted about this issue baffles me! If you are measuring exact then this trimmer works, but there is one HUGE problem. The edge of the paper guide is a 1/4 of an inch away from the blade! So if you need to trim off the white edge of a photo, you can't tell where the blade will fall. Tonic has never done this before on any of their trimmers, so why now? If you buy this...Be warned.

    Love it

This is really a nice paper trimmer, love the fact that you can use it for 8-1/2 x 11 paper. Very sharp and cuts clean . I consider it a good buy.

    hard to work with

The first two cuts were okay. I am cutting regular cardstock, nothing fancy. The baby line that I bought from here.
Then, the blade would not go down. Would not budge, at the very top of the blade, by where it meets the metal. I looked at the screws, they are in tact. on both pieces. It is the metal strip that the cutting blade meets to cut the paper. I have to forcefully pull the blade away from that metal strip to make it do the cut.
So, can you imagine how long this piece of cutting equipment is going to last? not long, I am afraid.
    I am NOT happy.

    Tonic Studios 8.5" Trimmer

LOVING this trimmer. The blade cuts cleanly, and it's great having a 6" measure (my 'old' trimmer only has a 5" measure) I'm also enjoying having 1/4" markings going down the full length of the platform.

    Nice sharp cuts

Tiring of regularly having to put blades in my SU trimmer/scorer, I decided to give this a try. I like the compact size, although it would be nice if it cut standard paper lengthwise. The blade is nice and sharp, but you do have to hold the paper down firmly, especially substantial cardstock, or it will slip and make an uneven cut.

Tonic Studios - Tim Holtz - 8.5 Inch Comfort Trimmer

Do not know what I did before I bought this! So many trips to counter where I keep the large cutter and now this on my desk and saves me many steps and time. THIS IS THE BEST PURCHASE, SO DO BUY ONE.

The cutting edge was not smooth

I'm very disappointed as I have the "old style" Tonic cutter and I LOVE IT. The only thing wrong with it is it wasn't big enough. When you came out with this cutter that went to a full 6 in, I was ecstatic. Imagine my disappointment when I received it and the edge that rubs against the blade was not smooth, causing my first cuts to be ragged. I am returning to exchange for another.

    Shocked I Didnt Love

I love all things Tim Holtz so when he showed this baby sized trimmer I thought it would answer my needs to having to constantly replace the blades to my slide trimmer. This size cutter was wonderful for portability and taking up little table and storage space but its limitations quickly became a problem for me as the clear plastic guard prevents paper over certain lengths from going through. It took some effort but I was able to remove the guard so when needed, it wasn't an issue but only half a dozen cuts in and the blade was already dull as the cuts weren't complete or clean. The integrity of the blade continued to dull with use though it was supposed to be self sharpening. My last upset is the measuring on the board itself – there is a gap between the ruler and the blade for which you need to account for or you will have your measurements off. I had to mark my papers in advance before cutting which added an extra step and made the rulers on the cutter pointless. I haven't used the cutter since because the blade is so dull and I want only professional results. This is the only time I have given a poor review for any Tim Holtz products and I have a feeling the large cutter would be a 5 star but I don't have the money to try and find out. Don't know if there are bad batches out there since there are so many great reviews for this product? I would really like to be think the later and that I was one of the unlucky ones but there are flaws with this product design at a minimum all should be aware of.

Are there any replacement parts needed?   By: User (04-Apr-16) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • No, it has a self sharpening blade. What I like about it is that it's six inches wide. So I can cut my photo to any size that I want. I love Tonic trimmers. I give it five stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ By: raeraesma (07-Apr-16) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!

  • Hi,
How do you remove the cutting guard off of the 8.5" guillotine cutter?   By: JvV (03-May-21) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • Hi JvV,
This plastic finger guard snaps in and is easy to remove. To remove it you do the following. I used a thin metal ruler to remove mine as I think a screwdriver could be to thick. The guard is secured in by two holes, one at the top and one at the bottom.
      1. The clip is in the bottom hole. So this is where you will get the guard to release.
      2. Raise up the guard and put the ruler (or thin screwdriver) between the guard and trimmer top close to the bottom hole.
      3. From under the guard put "light" pressure on the plastic piece that is going into the bottom hole (pushing towards you) and pull up the guard while applying pressure on the clip. The guard should pop out of that hole as you pull up. IF IT DOES NOT COME OUT EASILY, APPLY A LITTLE MORE PRESSURE AND PULL UP.
      4. Once the guard is out of the bottom hole, lift up the plastic piece to the angle of your cutting blade and it should come out of the top hole.

  • Will the blade dull if I cut thicker plastic sheets (i.e. report covers)? Is there a way to sharpen the blade should it get dull?   By: Shell-a-rama (07-Feb-20) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • Hello Shell-a-rama,
With plastic, it is best to cut one sheet at a time as the plastic is very smooth and will slide if you cut more than one at a time. Please note that you canNOT sharpen this blade. This is not a traditional guillotine trimmer where the blade has a knife type edge. The bottom of the Tonic blade is flat, so you are not cutting the paper, you are shearing it. • I just received my trimmer. Is the arm supposed to "lock" when pulled upright? Mine stays up until I pull it slightly to the right to make my cut. Is this the way it was designed or do I have a defective product?   By: dsa (07-Dec-18) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • I don't have this particular trimmer but I can tell you that at work we recently were required to replace all trimmers with newer models that have the safety feature you are describing. It's meant to keep the arm from slipping down and cutting when you are adjusting your paper. We hated it because it took a while to get used to. My own guillotine trimmers at home are years old and don't have that feature but I can see how it would be required on newer products. By: MoniL (09-Dec-18) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! • I bought my trimmer a few months ago and that feature is not on it. It looks like this is a new safety feature that has been added to the newer models. By: SheilaDavis10 (11-Dec-18) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!

Do the Tim Holtz paper cutters come with a warranty & if so how long?   By: User (09-Nov-21) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • All Tonic Studios products have a warranty for any manufacturers defect. Regarding the paper trimmers, they have this warranty, however if the user cuts through metal like a staple and damages the blade, this is not covered.
