Scrapbooking School Events
Submitted by: Kels
Article Courtesy of Scrapjazz.com: by Denise Gormish

I have fond memories of school events as a child. I remember carnivals, musical performances and library events. I don't have any photographs or written accounts to remember those days. As a result of my experience, I try to include those things in our scrapbooks for my children. I want them to remember the special days and events from their school.

Your own school is unique with its excellent qualities and experiences for your children. Remember to photograph, journal and scrapbook about those special days and events at school. If you need some ideas, here are few topics and examples to get you started:

  • 1_16School-Wide Events. Schools often participate in events that involve everyone in the school. From open house to book fairs, these events gather students from every grade to participate in something together. Take photographs of the events and record your child's participation in the event. Our school has a unique multicultural event at the end of the year in which each classroom studies a country, and then presents what they learned to the whole school. "It's All Greek to Me" records the year my daughter studied Greece and presented to the other classes.
  • Dramatic Productions. Does your school put on an annual drama or musical? If yes, record the event. If your child is involved in the production include information about your child's role and his or her thoughts about being in the production.

  • 2_15Art Projects. Beyond the basics of reading, writing and math, art projects can be a fun and educational addition to the curriculum. In addition to art projects in the classroom, your school may also have events centered on art at your school such as art shows and fundraisers. In our school, the 4th grade class creates a mural on the campus and has a special unveiling event for the entire school. "Mural Projects" includes photographs of the mural created by my daughter's class. I even included a pocket for a newspaper clipping about the event.
  • 3_10Musical Performances. Another area to consider is music, both vocal and instrumental. Does your school have special music classes and performances? Do they perform on campus or off campus? Consider music, your child's involvement and how it involves the whole school. Our school has an annual year-end concert with each class participating by either singing or playing instruments.
  • 4_08Special Days. Every school has days that are special. Often these days celebrate something such as a holiday or a special birthday. Kindergarteners and first graders at my daughter's school celebrate the 100th day of school. With special activities and cake, they take a break from the regular routine to have a big party. What is a special day at your school? Take photographs and create a page about it.
  • 5_04Class or School Honors. Most schools honor students for their achievements such as perfect attendance and top grades. Include these school-wide honors in your scrapbooks. Also, consider classroom honors and experiences. My daughter enjoyed being picked for Star of the Week. As a result, I went to school that day, took photographs and recorded her experience.
  • Fundraisers. Every school has fundraisers to raise money. What does your school do to raise money? Do they hold any special events? Does the library have a book fair to raise money? Is there an annual auction? Record these fundraisers as a way to remember what your family did to support your school.

Scrapbooking these events will provide great memories for your child. If you can be there to take photographs remember to get shots of your child and his or her classmates as well. Your child will want to remember who was in his or her class. If you can't be there in person, try to obtain photographs from the teacher. In our digital age most teachers will have a digital camera and will take photographs of special events. After the event, sit down with your child and ask him or her about the special event. Finally, create an appropriate layout of mini-book about your child's school experiences. It will take some time but it's worth it.
