Thursday, September 29th, 2011 – the morning was nice – we actually won a placed in trivia! After lunch at the buffet on the Lido deck the seas started getting very rough.

Then the day got really bad. Fifteen minutes after Bill went to the hot tub my gall bladder decided to get angry; I don't recall ever being in such intense pain. I left a note for Bill and Mus, our room steward helped me walk to the medical center to meet with the doctor.

After blood work and shot of dilaudid, an incredibly strong pain killer, they told me that if my gall bladder did not calm down by morning I would be airlifted off the ship to the closest country – Russia. Even worse, they said that area in Russia was not a good place for gall bladder surgery, I would have to get from Russia to South Korea.

Bill found my note and immediately went to the medical center. Fortunately the dilaudid had started working but unfortunately it was making me completely dizzy; the room was spinning out of control. I was taken to my room in a wheel chair – the doctor did not want me to try to walk under the influence of this strong pain killer.

Besides being dizzy from the pain shot, the seas were very, very rough. The pain killer made the room spin like an out of control merry-go-round and the rough seas made the ship rock left and right and pitch front to back. The double whammy of motion from turbulent ocean and nausea from the medication eventually left me with a horrendous case of sea sickness. It was a miserable night!

Friday, September 30th, 2011 – Bill went to the doctor's office as soon as it opened at 8AM and told them that my gall bladder was not hurting but I was seasick so they gave him a suppository for nausea for me. I had an appointment to see the doctor at 10:00AM and after using the suppository I really felt better. In less than 5 minutes I wasn't seasick anymore and my gall bladder didn't hurt.

I rested while he went to noon trivia and lunch. After trivia at 3:00PM, he came back to the room and curled up with me and we both slept from mid-afternoon right through the night; when we woke up it was Saturday mid-morning.

Saturday, October 1st, 2011 – A normal day – sea. That night we were thrilled when we went to the Lido deck for dinner to find they were serving lobster tails again. We've never had lobster on a cruise ship twice in 5 days! Apparently not all were cooked the night before so the ones that were left were prepared and served in the buffet but not in the main dining room tonight. What a nice surprise!

After dinner we knew it was not a good when the Captain announced we would be traveling a different route again to avoid really bad storms. Hopefully the new route would allow us to just skirt around the edges of this storm system. However, he told us to still expect some rough seas tonight and very, very rough seas tomorrow. Oh joy.

It was an awesome surprise to not only find our usual chocolates and adorable towel animal, but also two brown suede pouches on the foot of our bed after dinner. Inside each pouch was a leather ships log book for journaling. They are antique-looking; the front of the books have embossed, “2011 Asian-Australia Grand Voyage” and there are two pages for each day number with the Holland America logo in half-tones and “2011 Grand Voyage” on each page.

Also in the suede pouches were leather business card holders, also embossed with “Holland America” and “2011 Grand Voyage” along with the logo. What fantastic gifts! The wheels in my head are already turning about how to use the log book pages in my scrapbook.
