Journaling:
You're turning three this fall, so it's time for a little formal schooling. I'm a little nervous about teaching you how to read and write, though. You've already corrected me when I mistook an orangutan for a monkey, and a crocodile for an alligator. I'm afraid that if I teach you the skill of reading words on a page, I will have no claim to intellectual superiority at all.
In all seriousness, though, this is an adventure for me. It is an exercise in patience and repetition, and requires me to give lots of loving encourangement. Using a pencil is a must, so we can erase mistakes and start over again. I'm trying to teach you kindergarten, even though you won't turn five for another two years. I just have to remember that I am teaching you advanced skills and I should not get frustrated if you don't pick up on it right away. But you are doing pretty good so far. You are starting to understand that letters represent sounds, and that we string them together to form words. You can even write an almost-ledgible “C” and “I.”
At this point, we only do school for about 30 minutes a day. It takes a lot of concentration to write your letters out, and I don't want you to burn out. Besides, there are still many other ways to develop your three-year-old mind, such as drawing and puzzles. Life's not just about staying in the lines, anyway.
