Cordova was home to the Aleut tribe of native Alaskans and was first called "Orca Inlet" - it was later called "Puerto Cordova" after the city of Cordoba, Spain by Don Salvador Fidalgo in 1790. Prospectors settled the town in 1884 and one of the first oil fileds in Alaska was discovered in 1902 at Katalla, 47 miles southeast of Cordova and the name "Cordova" was actually established in 1906. CUrrently, the economy of Cordova now relies on fishing and canning, as well as small amounts of tourism. It is only accessible by train or boat.
