Journaling: Our day in Washington, DC started with a ride on the Metro from Falls
Church, VA. At age 62, this was my first subway ride! From the Lincoln Memorial,
We went to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Washington Monument, the Capitol, U. S. Botanical
Gardens, and the White House. Audie was sure we walked at least ten miles that day. Neither of us thought we would enjoy being in Washington, DC since we aren’t fond of big cities, traffic or crowds.
It was a beautiful, clear, cool day and seeing “The Mall” with all the monuments and government
buildings was very impressive. The return ride on the Metro was memorable. We got off at the Rosslyn
station to look for a restaurant. The escalator to the ground level is the third longest continuous span escalator in the WORLD. At more than 205 feet long and almost vertical, it was a challenge for me with my fear of heights! We found the elevator for the return trip down to the subway.
