This is the closest he's EVER let me get. He's lived here a long time, and I'm pretty sure he's figured out that I'm harmless. Sometimes he'll come as close as the house and sit in a tree in the back yard.
It's a little early for him and his mate to be raising babies, but I'm sure he's checking out the local food reserves, just to be ready for spring. Today, he was pretty intent on the ground squirrel burrows, so I suspect the hunting has been fairly good the past day or two.
His first mate was killed by a car a quarter mile from our driveway two years after we moved in. He was solitary, and obviously lonely, for a long time after that. Then a couple of years ago, a new female joined him. She's quite young, and he's been the primary provider, but I think she's getting the knack of parenting. I haven't seen her in a while, but I did hear the two of them calling to each other last week, so I hope she's still ok. I'd hate to see him lose another mate. The last loss was really hard on him.
