So many artists on this site from all over the world have shown pictures of WWII...thank goodness we have the supplies and techniques to give this period of world history its time to shine in a different light. You certainly made a beautiful memory out of a devasting time. I wish you the most luck in piecing this part of your family back into your history. I love the color pallet and embellishments. This is truly what scrapping a page is all about. TFS!
What a sad story! However you have created a beautiful masterpiece to tell their story! I love the design- it is simply gorgeous! I sure hope you find the missing links the family.
I have a friend who's dad was in Polish Air Force and to had flee to America and flew for the USAF here and went back to fight the Germans. He told me stories very similar to this from the Russians and the Nazi's both. Such loss and heartache. I hope you are able to trace your family in South Poland. What a beautiful lo you made.. suc a wonderful tribute to your family during these hard hard times for them.
My English is not good enough to express my fillings when I read your story. Thanks for it - sometimes I have feeling that people around the world don't pay to much attention to us as a country despite we have been the very big part of the history.
I love the colors!
You have really done them justice with this gorgeous lo, and yes you have made it more beautiful than it could ever be with your design and use of natural colours fibres and textures. Loved reading their story and hope you find the link you have been searching for! Cant wait to hear when you do!! Just love this!!
This is exquisite and, as you say, poignant. You have captured perfectly the feel of Poland in that period of unrest and heartbreak. Hope you eventually discover the missing links in your story. I do so love the earthtones and natural elements. Beautifully and thoughtfully done.
Amazing layout! Well, sorry that I've been missing for several weeks in the forums and galleries and blogs but I've have had 6 or 7 kids to take care of each day for most of the summer, guests stay with us, lots of summer vacation mishaps (including sick kid among so many other yucky things) and now I am really behind on EVERYTHING. Hopefully life will slow down in September to catch up with all my online friends.
Oh Natalie! This is amazing! All of your pages are so beautiful and interesting - a real work of art! The history and pictures that go with them are priceless. I can only imagine how beautiful your whole album would be to look through!
Southern Poland, 1930. The times were hard, poverty was rampant, but perhaps there was hope for a better life and for change? This is a photograph of my maternal Great Aunt Zofia and her husband with 3 of their children. Whenever I look at this photo my heart sort of breaks. I see a certain pride still evident amidst the tattered hand me down clothing, the cast away shoes, the remade dresses....it has a poignancy that touches me deeply. They are standing on what appears to be a high spot on their small land holding. At least they had this bit of land to call their own. In less than 10 years their world would fall apart with the invasion of Poland by the Nazis. And then their hardships would be even greater..... I have not been able to find the link to this lost part of my family, although I believe that perhaps they are still there, in this quiet corner of Southern Poland. I have hopes that the family survived the 2nd World War. I am still searching for clues. It was important to me to present this photograph in the most "natural" manner. The colors needed to be earthy, the textures homespun, no trace of anything shiny or glitzy. Yet, it needed to reflect beauty, their beautiful landscape amidst the deprivation, their pride of place in time. I kept the color palette neutral, used inks and sprays, paper distressing, twine, cardboard elements and dried bits of flowers and pods from my garden along with paper ones...all in the hopes of reflecting the family's pastoral beauty. This is my entry for the August Heritage Challenge.
