One of my ultimate faves. When I make it I make mashed carrots and turnips with it, oh it's so YUM. A big mistake made by many people is that this is actually called COTTAGE PIE, Shepherds Pie is made with lamb. My aunt informed me of this last year, as I too had been calling it Shepherds Pie.
This is such an English recipe, but it is only shepherds pie when it is made with ground LAMB (shepherds - lamb, right)?! If its made with beef, it is officially cottage pie. We would normally use fresh carrots, and one addition that my kids always loved is to smash up a bag of chips, plain salted flavour, while, still in the bag, then mix them with the grated cheese for the topping - makes it crunchy and cheesy - yum! Nice to see our recipes crossing the pond!
I have some of my Grandmother's original recipes on one of my scrapbook pages....this will be priceless for your children's children...trust me....great job!!
