I agree with comments below. You can go UP with cubes; shelves; CD rack. You have lots of neat items, but you probably can't find the item you want when you want it. I feel your pain.
I'm thinking I would get a CD rack or a small shelf to put on the top of the hutch. Moving all of the CD cases would give you quite a bit of room to arrange your other supplies. Maybe a spinning caddy for tools?
I like Julie Morgenstern's SPACE process from "Organizing from the Inside Out": *Sort* into like items, *Purge* what you don't really like or use, *Assign* a "home" (where the stuff will sit on a shelf, in a drawer -- don't buy anything new just yet), *Containerize* (*now* buy the proper-sized containers for what you need to store and where you are storing them), then *Equalize* (at some regular interval, assess how well your system is working and make necessary adjustments). I hope this helps!
I would put up a shelf, above your hutch...find some cute matching storage baskets. Add a cute tag to each basket with the contents labeled. You could replace your string with the cards...use a curtain wire attached to each end...more sturdy. You could then make some cute clips out of clothes pins and clip your cards onto the wire. I participated in a scrap room makeover a few years back...you may find some good ideas in here: http://www.scrapbook.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/1550405
Oh my--looks like what I had, and I am cleaning everything and labeling jars, drawers etc What I did was took everything down, bought containers(little ones) at the dollar store sorted everything labeled and got rid of "junk" i kept for future projects and they just accumulated. I use baby food jars anything I can see through. Good Luck. I am into this clean-up going on my 3rd day.
