The three photos are copies of my paternal great-grandparents. They married in July 1904 my great-grandmother was only 13 when she married my great-grandfather who was 23. They both were ten years apart in age. Shortly after they moved from Paulding, Ohio. To Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Where my great-grandfather found work. Plus, his older brother lived in the area. They had their first child in Nov 1906. In about 1907/1908 they kept getting letters from John's parents. About how great and wonderful the land in Northern Michigan was great place to raise a family. John's parents and younger siblings moved up to Northern Michigan form Northern Indiana about 5 years earlier in 1903.
After long talks and careful thoughts my great-grandparents decided since they were young and just started a family they decided to move. Their son was almost 2 and they were expecting their second child. In September of that year. They decided to move to Northern Michigan in spring/summer of 1908.
My great-grandfather's parents and other siblings never meet my great-grandmother before. It been said they were shocked when he step off the train with a beautiful very young wife. Nellie, was 17. I read a story they my great-grandfather's sisters went up to him and whispered in his ear. That he was robbing the cradle! My great-grandmother was a very feisty lady. She hated drinking and didn't like dancing at all. John's sisters even told her if she was to act like a married lady. She had to put her hair up in a bun. My great-grandmother always had her hair partial up but the rest of it was hanging down in curls. My great-grandmother was pissed when they up her hair in a bun. But she went along with it to try and keep the peace.
But both would be even more upset with John's father. George, he was wired about 200.00 money that my great-grandparents saved up. To buy a house on a little hill near a lake. They decided since it was a beautiful piece of property. They would sent the money for George to buy it for them. Well come to find out John's dad took the 200.00 and bought 80 acres of land behind his house. My great-grandparents were angry with him. I think they probably would have gone back to Indiana. But they couldn't afford it and had to build a house behind their property. Because the land they wanted was still up for sell. But they couldn't afford to buy it. So, they had to live for a year in his parent's house. They were glad to live in their own house. My great-grandmother wanted to be far away from her in-laws. My great-grandfather's family were people that like to dance and enjoy family time. My great-grandmother told him he could go. But she and the kids wouldn't be home when he got back. He didn't go because he loved her too much. I heard they were a great team and a good looking couple. No matter their flaws they both loved each other so much. My great-grandmother died of blood posing in 1924 at age of 33. Just a month after giving birth to her 8th child. It been said John, was never the same again. Like a piece of his heart died with her that day.
He went on to married another lady and have two more kids with her. But couple years later he asked for a divorce form his second wife. Because he realized he didn't love her as much as his first wife. It probably didn't help that when he had his teeth pulled. He was heavily Medicaid. When he came through he kept saying his wife name it was not his second wife. But his late wife Nellie. It was said he was happy with the divorce and he went on to live a few more years. When he died he was buried next to Nellie.
