The "AFTER" picture.

I wanted to do a very special project for my husband as a gift for Christmas this year. I've been really impressed and simply love all those altered clocks some have been doing and showcasing on this site. I wanted to give it a try...but in my own frugal way. I love love love going junk shopping (did I mention that I love junk shopping) LOL! My husband and I took a drive to their hunting cabin in northern Wisconsin back in early November and along the way we pass this awesome junk dealer. We always try to stop in whenever we are near the area. Well, I thought I could definitely find some vintage clocks, and I really hit jackpot! I found three of them. This rectangular one and two round clocks. This rectangular clock would be perfect for the photo of his parents I wanted to use.
My husband and his brothers deer hunt at the cabin over the week of Thanksgiving and that's my time to take off work and do crafts and whatever else I want to do. Since he was gone, it was a perfect time for me to make this heritage clock.
I first started by taking the entire thing apart as much as I could. Unfortunately, none of the clock parts were anything I was hoping to salvage, but the plastic frame was perfect. After taking the shell apart, I sandpapered each piece with 60 grit sandpaper to give a distressed appearance. The sandpaper also gouged the plastic, but that was ok...it helped with the next steps. After sandpapering every piece, I then painted all of it with a mixture of tan/cream acrylic paint. The pieces dried quickly and only needed two coats. Next I took my handy-dandy brown ink and continued distressing each piece of the shell....giving it an aged look. After allowing the ink to dry, I put clear Rock Candy over the entire piece. Then waited and waited and waited anxiously for it to dry. While I waiting, I then did all the fussy cutting of the two smaller photos of his parents, made the handle, the bird nest (I LOVE MAKING THOSE), and dolled up the larger photo of them. I was becoming so excited with how it all was coming together. It took me 3 days to create the piece from start to finish. I just couldn't be happier with it. I wanted to share it with you all so badly, but my husband had our digital camera with him during the hunt and I've just now been able to sneak this on the computer. :) I took close-ups of some of the details of this project to share with you. I so hope he likes it....not sure where he's going to put it.
