US Cavalry Sgt James Cooney was stationed at Fort Bayard near Glenwood, NM in the mid-1870's. During that time, he discovered a large vein of gold and silver in the area. After he mustered out in 1876, he worked the claim until he was killed by Indians in 1880. His fellow miners constructed this tomb in his memory.
