JAN 2015... Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers are very similar...sometimes it is hard to tell them apart. Downys are smaller is size, they have smaller bills, and they have black spots on the underside of their tails. One good way to tell them apart is to look at the bill...the length of a Hairy Woodpecker's bill is about the length of its head. Whereas, a Downy's bill is less than half the length of its head.
