Saturday, January 11th, 2014 - Manta, Ecuador. As are many of the passengers, we are wondering why they brought us here. Hot and humid we can deal with but at full day in a port with nothing to do or see doesn't make for a very interesting day.

Manta is a very successful fishing town and claims to be the tuna fish capital of the world. The shuttle passed the main point
of interest which was a statue with a big tuna fish on top of it. There are actually 5 tuna fish canneries or processing plants in Manta. We didn't see any of them but we did smell one of them as our shuttle passed near the area.

The shuttle dropped everyone off at a place in town with a craft and local merchandise market. Almost half of the vendors were selling Panama hats. Odd that Panama hats are not made in Panama – they are all made here in Ecuador. The hats are manufactured in Monte Cristi which is a 20 minute ride from Manta. Some of the passengers took a tour to Monte Cristi to see the hats being made but we decided not to go on the tour.

We got a ride to the mall from a young National Guardsman and his wife who live in Manta with their 10-month old daughter. They have been married for 5 years and he is still submitting paperwork to get her into the United States to live. We spent about 2 hours checking our email and then got a cab back to the marketplace where our shuttle bus was waiting.
