Jacob's ladder is a stairway that goes up the side of one of the mountains. It was once known as the inclined plane. Built in the 1800's as a railway for the St. Helena Railway company, it was used to take manure, soil and plant based rubbish out of Jamestown to be used by farmers. The railway was not used after 1867 when the inclined plane was damaged by fire and has since been removed.

The Jacob's Ladder seen today was rebuilt in 1871 by the Royal Engineers.

The ladder is made up of 699 steps up (and of course 699 steps back down). It is a popular tourist attraction and it stays packed with the adventurous (like Bill) challenging themselves to climb up or down the stairs.
