Wow, what an incredible history! I'd love to stand in one of the rooms out in the middle of the river and view the beautiful scenery from a window...I bet it's an incredible view!
Journaling: Cheateau de Chenonceau was built on the River Cher in the 16th century. The chateau was built on the piers of an old fortified mill. The original chateau did not include the bridge/gallery portion. In 1547, King Henri II gave the chateau to his favorite lay, Diane de Poiticis. She created a garden and had the bridge over the River Cher built. Upon his death, Henri's widow Catherine de Medici removed Diane and made the gardens and the bridge/gallery more magnificent.
Louise Dupin saved the chateau during the revolution. In WWI, the chateau served as a hospital. In WWII, it served as an escape route over the River Cher & away from the Germans.
