This is another one of my tintypes which are positive images printed on thin sheets of iron. They were often taken at amusement parks and fairs. This image was taken circa 1912 at North Beach Amusement Park and Beer Garden which closed with Prohibition. The property is now part of Laguardia Airport. I did some quick research on tintypes and found that the images were smaller (i.e. cheaper) plates, which often "involve scenarios of role-playing, posing, earthy jokiness, a sense of the ridiculous, as well as being quite 'everyday' - memorial portraits." (America and the Tintype by Steven Kasher and Brian Wallis). In this image, my grandmother (left) and a friend are dressed in period costumes in a boat named the "Mayflower".
