It was taken off the market due to some environmental issue in the State of California. However, I read on the sb.com forums a few days ago that an e-mail has gone out saying that Un-Du had been purchased by someone who is going to put it back on the market. That being said, I've not seen or heard anything further about it. Hope it's not just a rumor.

I did manage to find two "spare" bottles at my Michael's thanks to a tip from a scrapping friend. They had removed all of the Un-Du in the scrapbooking section, but had missed the Un-Du displayed in the paint section.

Don't use lighter fluid, it has oils in it.

Use BESTINE. Bestine is chemically identical to Un-Du (they are both Heptane). Bestine is pure, like Un-Du. I've used Bestine for YEARS (just refilled my Un-du bottles). I also use it in my book business (yes, both my work and hobbies involve paper!) Bestine is at any Michaels, ACMoore, etc near the Rubber Cement (it's technically rubber cement remover).

I'm always having to unattach and move photos and embellishments to better balance a layout or to cover a wrongly placed eyelet hole, paper tear etc. I'm one of those scrapbookers who unfortunately fell in love with the craft but have absolutely no inherent creativity.

I just got through updating my original Where is Undo post and saw this new one. I found "New" Un-du" yesterday at Michaels. It was in the Art sections, not scrapbooking. They just got it. Don't know how it compares to "old" undu. we'll see. Before I started scrapbooking I used lighter fluid for years to get stickers off things with no detrimental effects to the appearance, but I can't vouch for the archival effects. I'm still going to look for heptane. My Michaels doesn't seem to have it.

I've always seen it called lighter fluid, no matter if it was used on charcoal or in a lighter. In fact the package I used to buy (Kingsford brand) stated "Lighter fluid" on the can. Even if it's not the exact same compound, the use expectations are the same: you burn fluid in a cigarette lighter, you're not supposed to physically touch it or put it on things that you come into physical contact with like you do with UnDu.

I think you're correct, Liz. There are different kinds of lighter fluid, but they're all labeled as lighter fluid. Zippo fuel is naptha-based and disposable lighter fuel is butane-based. Charcoal starter fluid is petroleum solvents (not sure which ones).

I agree that the main difference is that lighter fluid is not meant to be handled the way you handle Undu. However, after looking around at what's in Undu, I'd definitely recommend following safety precautions on the bottle (using in a ventilated area, etc) and at the very least wash my hands afterward. It is a great product, but contains some scary stuff.

I just saw a big bottle of the Heptane at Michael's..since that is what undu is I would go with that first.

Found the following article. Hopefully, I attached the link alright. I'd completely forgotten that my mother used it to get out chewing gum that ended up in my hair when I forgot to discard the gum before bedtime.

I think we may be talking about two different types of fuel. Lighter Fluid comes in a small tin and is what is used to fill non-butane cigarette lighters. I think what you are talking about is Charcoal Lighter. Perhaps they are actually the same thing chemically,just different sized containers???

Because you're not using lighter fluid indoors on things that will be handled repeatedly like UnDu is so exposure risk is different. Lighter fluid is supposed to be used outdoors (well ventilated) on wood or charcoal (which you're not supposed to touch after you pour the lighter fluid on) and is burned (which could cause a chem reaction to change the hazardousness of the toxic chemical).

I checked out Grip Solvent on Amazon.com and a reviewer says it can't be used as a substitute as it leaves an oily residue.

Oh well, I guess we can only hope another manufactuer will come up with an effective replacement.

Undu & lighter fluid are not the same thing. Some people use lighter fluid to clean photos, but I don't know about the long-term effects on the photos.
