How To's on Glimmer Mist

I love my Glimmer Mist. One reason they say not to shake it is because the glimmer that settles to the bottom can get caught up in the tube to the nozzle. I've never had that happen, though I have changed how I mix mine. I roll it btwn my palms like you would if you were making a clay snake. I only let it roll half a turn (bc the bottle is an oval) and then I roll the other way. It's really fast to do it like that...faster than I thought it would be.

I like masking with mine. I just did this layout a couple days ago with the Timeless Romance Glimmer Screen and Graphite Glimmer Mist.

I also misted the two scalloped borders. They were white but the Delphinium color was just perfect!

I like to paint chipboard and mist it too. And just giving a subtle hint of glimmer with the pearl or Iridescent Gold is nice. They're both in a clear liquid so all you get is the glimmer. I can't get enough of the stuff. I mentioned to my DH today that I want all the colors...he just looked at me!

For the record: You CAN Glimmer Mist Easter eggs, but the glimmer doesn't show up nearly as well as it does on paper. We colored our eggs Friday night, and while Jory tie-dyed eggs, Lizzie and I experimented with Glimmer Mist-over-regular egg dye.

Yeah I don't get "swirling" it either...I mean, it would take FOREVER to get mixed that way, I unscrew the top a little to release any pressure, then shake it like crazy. I have never had any problems at all. If glimmer gets clogged, you can run hot water over it, or pop the top off the sprayer and blow canned air through it.

I use masks all the time, but I don't stick them down with anything, I just put the mask or stencil where I want and spray, then lift the mask directly up.

I use GM so much, I don't think I have done a lo without it in a REALLY long time!

Quick sprays in a sweeping motion is best. I use a Ranger non stick craft mat under what I am spraying. I don't mind the mess (it cleans up easy).

You can use a brayer with it to give the mist like a watercolor look instead of a sprayed look.

You can you it to dye anything that is porous. Fabric, ribbon, lace, card stock, chipboard, tiles...etc.

Great advice Nicole-- Thanks for the infor-- I too have noticed the angle of the spray makes a difference but I hadn't thought about how fast I was spraying it! Thanks for the tips!

One thing about "drips" and "big drops"...

Like others have said keep the sprayer wiped off ...

I usually spray once on a scrap to clear the sprayer, then spray my layout.

But, the drips and drops have to do with the angle of spray, and how heavily you spray...

I've learned if I spray straight down I get a heavier droplet, but if I mist vertically across a box or trash can , lightly at paper or whatever, the spray is finer...

A light fast pump generates a finer mist, a slower harder pump gets a heavier mist with larger droplets.

Again, I've used both techniques, and I totally agree that part of the mist look is the random look of the spray, as it will be different in different areas of a project.

I say, relax, have fun, and practice.



"Wet" work isn't for everyone. I have found precision scrappers get sometimes tense about it.... But, I've converted several folks to using inks and mists, who love them now, and were like "not on my layouts" before watching me use them...

If you're a free spirit like me, you just go with the flow and work the mist into the design, but I don't crop "formally" usually.


Another possible technique, if you're worried about ruining something, is working with seperate pieces of paper and then using them as elements on background paper. Then you won't "ruin" a layout by spraying on the background paper, if you are nervous and haven't used mist much...


And again having said that sometimes "accidents" make the best designs.

The more you use mist, the more you'll love it.

I don't know what people mean when they say not to shake it.. I shake the heck out of mine.. I don't get any problems. Now I have had to clean out some sprayers before esp after weeks and weeks of non-use.

I use my glimmer mist on almost everything I do. I love it so much. I do have to say it is a random thing. Like sometimes, I get drips and drops but really; I would want to think it's how the product should be used... I adore the random uneven look anyway.

I sprayed the dog and big paw sticker on the left side of the two page layout Titled Oscar Dachshundwith Glimmer Mist (Caramel Apple).

I held the stickers way down in my trash can with a plastic liner in it. I didn't want it too heavy, so I sprayed lightly. I'm impatient, so I always dry sprays and inks with my hair dryer, so I can move on quickly. Or, you can let it dry overnight, depending on how heavily you spray.

These were cardstock type stickers without a slick surface, so the mist soaked in fine. A slick sticker might have to be lightly sanded, and you would end up with a more distressed finish.

As a side note, I also lightly inked his ears and bone with Tim Holtz distressing ink pad in burlap, prior to spritzing with the glimmer mist.

When I distress, I like layers of color and texture, so I often use an ink then a mist and may even use a copic marker after inking then mist... depending on the look I want. You can also mist over chalk lightly for a cool look.

They have a sample in our LSS of a canvas bag misted with several layers of Maya Mist and Glimmer Mist, then collaged with fabric flowers and birds. It's really cool!

If you shake the bottle you'll have more big globs. I roll mine and swirl it to mix. I spray little things inside a smaller bucket with coffee filters in the bottom. Bigger items on newspaper in the garage.

I've masked layotus, cards with it. And sprayed flowers, chipboard with it.

Sara, I did use it with a stencil that I made myself using the cricut, and used it for the background on this page. It curls up a bit when its wet, but then it straightens out fairly well. and it is definitely messy. someone gave me the tip of putting it inside a box and spraying it there so it doesn't get all over everything. have fun!

Hi Sara--
This is how I use it:
I spray it on flowers, inked cardstock, cards etc.. when I want a shimmer, not glitter--Sometimes I let it dry and do a second coat--Don't spray too much at once or the paper gets water spots--Be sure to shake the GM VERY well and keep the nozzle wiped off to prevent "glops" as you spray--It can also be used with masks/templates-- though I haven't done that-- But all you do is lay the template/mask down where you want it, tape it in place using repositionable tape and spray---
I would be careful where you spray as it gets everywhere like hair spray does-- it doesn't come off very easily either so I spray outside on cardboard--as with any new technique, practice!

I have a bottle of Tatered Angels Glimmer Mist and watned to use it as my demonstrated technique at my Crop on April 10th but I need the 101 on how to use it. Any help would be great.
