Modge Podge???

I will be making a cookie sheet calendar for my mother for the holidays in the theme of her favorite movie of all time "Gone with the Wind",,,,,,,

The dates will be chipboard tiles (about 1 3/4" X 1 1/8") on some of which I plan to adhere small photos of the main charachters in the movie (I will cut up post cards to get these photos),,,,,The remainder of the tiles will be covered with pp that coordinates with the color theme,,,,,

My question is this,,,can i "seal" these tiles with modge podge? I'd LIKE to protect the tiles and pp a bit, and I'd also like a shiny look to these,,,,,,,

I've never used modge podge before, so I'm not certain if this is the proper use for it, or if there's another product that would do what I want a bit better,,,,,,

any help is appreciated Thankyou

edited to add this: I'll be stamping the dates with ink on the tiles,,,,,,,do you recommend I do this BEFORE sealing,,,,,,,,,,or will this make the ink run?? Should I do it after? Will the ink STICK?? LOL,,,,,,,sorry for all the questions,,,,,,

Did you say a cookie sheet calendar? What is that?

I used modge-podge a lot several years ago when i went through a decoupage obsession and covered millions of paper mache boxes... I'm pretty sure people would duck into alleys when they saw me coming with their "gifts"

Anyhow, I'm pretty sure modge-podge would do the trick, although you have a good question about the stamping. I wouldn't stamp before applying modge-podge as it is very runny and may smear. But maybe try a test piece and stamp on top using stazon (which I don't have but hear it's good for glossy surfaces). Someone else probably has more to say about the stamping part.

edited to add: if you want the shiny look be sure to get glossy modge podge (not matte) and beware of long drying times in your climate... although you probably have AC so maybe not an issue.

a cookie sheet calendar is a perpetual calendar made from a cookie sheet that has been painted and/or covered with pp,,,,,

you put magnets on the back of the dates, and VOILA, calendar,,,,,,,here's one a friend of mine made though she used glass marbles, flat on one side, for dates,,,,,,,

mod podge is perfect for this project -you can use it to add the pp to your tiles and then once dry add a top coat (or two or three) to seal everything in. There are different types of mod podge - matte, glossy, and sparkle - so just depends on the look you want.

As far as stamping goes, I would stamp the paper/tile first, then seal with mod podge. I would use a solvent ink like StazOn and be sure it's dry before sealing though.

Yes, Let the ink DRY for atleast a few hours! If you have time, to be safe let dry for a day!

I was going to suggest stazOn too. There is a mod podge at walmart that is called Hard Coat Mod Podge Satin. I used it on metal lunch boxes that I altered for my kids as recipe boxes, it put a hard coat over the top to seal it for many years of usage and it is waterproof. I have used rub ons and then used this over it to seal them for good. I have pics in my gallery of the lunch boxes if you would like to look.

OK, then, Modge Podge it is I may use number stickers instead of stamps and modge podge them on, IF I can find some I like,,,,,

Just an FYI - Mod Podge takes a FULL 24 hrs to dry. Applying additional layers of Mod Podge before this drying time has elapsed will result in tiny BUBBLES forming on your project!

I always found the foam paint brushes also gave me bubbles, so I used a wide flat regular paint brush.

Wow, thanks for sharing that mercytiara. I was planning on going to get some modge podge tomorrow and some foam brushes to apply it! This thread saved my weekend! lol

I can't help much with the mod podge question, but here is one that I made. Everything is magnetic, including the calendar blank, except for the background. I did it that way so she could hang it vertical or horizontal, depending on the pictures, lists, etc. that she had for the month. The extra pieces are stored on back. If you were just wanting to put the mod podge on for protection, she is not having any problems with the pieces coming apart. If you want it for the glossiness, it will be great!

yes Holly, you want to use Mod Podge. Get the glossy if you want it to be shiny. Get the sparkle if you want it to be glittery/shimmery- personally, I the sparkle (it's BLING!).

I put on several layers using a foam brush and have never had bubbles or any issues with it not drying. I use an old credit card to flatten the paper out and get any airbubbles out.

Use staz-on ink if you're going to stamp- the solvent ink tends to bleed.

Oh- you can tint the mod podge with acrylic paint if you want to do an antiqued look to your stuff too.

well, I'm making it, and I didn't end up using modge podge afterall,,,I tried, but I didn't like the shiny look,,,which I thought I would, lol,,,,

it looks so nice without it,,,I am having issues finding GWTW pieces, so it might end up just being victorian or vintage isnpired,,,I'm disappointed It's coming out beautifully though, and I do love it,,,I just thought GWTW would be perfect for Mom,,,but at 4.95 for ONE POST CARD, it's not looking good, lol,,,and size issues are there,,,,the biggest cookie sheet I could find was 17 inches long, which means the date pieces can't be as large as I want,,,,HOWEVER, I'm happily surprised with my own talent, lol,,,,because it really DOES look nice Now I want one for MYSELF,ROFL,,,,

Tiffany, I will keep that sparkle Modge Podge in mind though, because I'd like to make a cookie sheet SOMETHING for DD, and she'd LOVE that sparkle!!! I'm thinking something ballet themed or fairy themed that she can hang on her wall, not a calendar per se, but maybe a little note center or something,,,,and the more sparkle the better for dd Sounds perfect for her project

Glass beads make the best magnets. I had some I made on the fridge until the little ones got big to get at them sigh.

I've inspired my holiday gift giving this year, lol,,,but lemme tell you it's a HECK of alot of work making all those tiles!!! You CAN use glass beads, the kind that are flat on one side,,,the advantage is they're small, they fit easily, and you don't have to MAKE them from scratch,,,you can also use game pieces, dice, all kinds of things,,,,,,,the disadvantage to the glass beads though, I think is that you have to paint the numbers on the reverse side backwards,,,

anywho, I wanted tiles, and I've got them, but I've spent HOURS making them, and I STILL have 12 month tiles to make, as well as all the holiday tiles, and about 12 of the date tiles left,,,but I'm picky,,,they all had to be inked and distressed, etc,,,,I love my Mom,,,she's a wonderful Mom

Holly- with the shinyness.... try the matte- it's not a shiny as the glossy. I don't EVER use the glossy because it's too shiny for me.

What did you use to cover the stuff with to protect it?

As for putting the numbers on the back of the tiles- why not use a sharpie and draw them on rather than paint?

Tiffany, I used a very light coat of spray acrylic,,,,,

Your Mom is gonna love this!! Holly - make sure you use a stamping ink like stayzon for your tiles. That way they won't mess up with the Modge Podge.

I made a clipboard about 5 years ago and used all kinds of embellies and used Modge Podge. Its holding up great! I did add stuff like ribbon ties AFTER the modge podge.

I would put on thin layers of modge podge at a time and let it dry inbetween. But I didn't wait the full 24 hours.

If you use a regular brush - check and make sure it doesn't lose hairs easily - ask me now I know this LOL.
